Re: Small Scale Meeting at LALS in July

I had a terrific time at the meet. Thanks to Matt for organizing it and to C.P. and Alex for their hard work. The track was in great shape. Lots of fun equipment to look at and friends new and old to talk with. Fun stuff!

Are you bringing your Uncle Sam down as Well?
No, Uncle Sam will be staying at Bitter Creek. I could barely cram my 4 3/4" stuff in my pick-up truck.

See ya tomorrow and Saturday,

Re: Attention 4-3/4" gauge enthusiasts

I have burned coal each year its been at LALS. The 1" track is NOT next to the mountainside and in the green center area. That said, ashpans are a must just about any track as well as possibly spark arrestors/screens. Mine has one, so I don't know. Mohoney can fill us in more. There are always some...

Re: Attention 4-3/4" gauge enthusiasts

Alright you guys. I've been spending so much time on my "big" stuff that my 4 3/4" stuff has been kind of idle, but your getting me fired up again [pun intended]. I'll do my best to be at the Small Scales Meet at LALS. Jeff, I have always admired you stuff. I see you are building a C-25 in 2 1/2" sc...

Re: Attention 4-3/4" gauge enthusiasts

A-ha, THAT Jeff Smith! I used your excellent 3000 series boxcar plans and doubled them to create my 3" scale boxcar. Very fine drawings sir. I think 1 1/2" on 4 3/4 is a great way to go for NG that is more portable and easy to manage. Me I'm doing twice that size on 7.5" and it's a major operation ...

Re: Type of coal

Sabin, As CP said, I use a hammer. I made up a screen box with 1/4" mesh hardware cloth to screen out the dust and tiny bits. The welsh came in a USPS box- seemed effective. The Penn Coal in a 50lb bag stuck in a box- lots of dust in the bag! Thanks CP and Greg. I've been using a hammer and cold ch...
