That "breathing" sound from a stationary locomotive is usually from the steam-powered air compressor(s). It automatically starts and stops to keep the air reservoirs up to operating pressure. Thanks for that info.
I actually purchased the sander valves from Brian Keim.
They are a different design than what I desire, and are too large for my loco. Absolutely gorgeous, too.
They will be gracing larger steamers in my local Live Steamers Group.
Nothing wasted.

I need photos and details for the and dome-mounted pneumatic sander valves used on US logging locomotives. Gorgeous work! Is the #18 the last locomotive that ran on the Kahalui Railway on Maui? Formerly from the Carson and Colorado Rwy Owens Valley operation? Or is it the C&C locomotive restored in Laws, NV? My brain wants to understand... and my books are still in storage. Thanks for posting those photo...

Very nice! That will serve you well. Only suggestion: The flat-profile wheels might resist steering when loaded. I know this from my two engine stands. One has flat profile wheels (same red polymer as yours) and is difficult to rotate when loaded, while the other has slightly rounded profile wheels ...
