Re: Limited room for steam.

I face a similar situation with a high crown sheet and limited steam volume. In my Build log there is a discussion of solutions builders have made: http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=106308&start=12 Look at the lower half of that page and beyond for some pictures and drawings o...

Re: New Propane car

Go the extra route and get Propane certified quick connect fittings. Cost is minimal to go the safer route.
Some railroads might not allow anything other than fittings rated for gas fuels.

Re: Des Peres Valley #4 - Baldwin 0-6-0 using Allen Models parts.

Now the fun begins. Like Harold said: "...patience." At least you have drawings, which allows you to make useful pasts without having to design them. Pick a small part and make it. Record the time it took you as a note one each drawing. One part at a time, increasing in complexity, and you will be a...

Re: Polishing doorknobs

Specific type of spray lacquer? Nope. I've used at least three different types of rattle can clear lacquer available at ACE Hardware, NAPA and others with equal success. As is normal for painting, the final quality is all in the prep and cleaning, and application temperature. And careful spray appli...

Re: Which pressure gauge to use?

That extra petticoat makes sense. On full-sized logging locomotives I have worked on, some had "annular venetian blind" petticoats:
Several tapered rings stacked together. An interesting setup for oil burners.

Re: Polishing doorknobs

When I polish brass/bronze I always finish clean the items and then spray them with clear-coat lacquer. That has lasted on my steamer for 15 years and more. My new Steam Launch has the same treatment. Pics below. I did the same to all the brass in my 1924 Seattle home. Removed all the old paint and ...
