Re: Boiler treatment

Carl: Points well made. My standard steaming operating procedures do include testing all steam appliances prior to leaving the steaming bay. I have a dental tool that works perfectly for holding the lower pressure SuperScale safety valve closed while testing the operation of the higher safety. Same ...

Re: Boiler treatment

To limit dissolved oxygen when steaming up my locomotives I ALWAYS open a valve on top of the steam dome and let it vent steam for several minutes during fireup. That is standard practice for many city steam plants, too: automatic steam venting to remove dissolved oxygen from feed water. True for th...

Re: Basket case 2-4-0

That's useful info, Chris.
My newly acquired steam launch has a boiler and engine built in mid-1960s.
All the large steam lines to the engine use flare fittings.
All the small steam lines to things like the oil atomizer use brass compression fittings.

I'm paying attention.

Buy HF tools and no-one will steal them.
Or, buy a HF tool box and put good tools in it.
Reminds me of the old advice about the safest place to store a violin is in a banjo case.
As a retired violinist I must correct that statement.
Use a viola case.

Perhaps a dumb question but have you considered calling the riggers and asking what you should do to prepare the machines before they come?
That's a good way to interview the riggers.
