Re: Side rod bushing clearance

Delrin is naturally more flexible than metals, so I would expect it to move more in stress situations.
I do not have scientific measurements to back up my opinion. Just experience machining and using it.

Re: Another CliShay Build

Get the book.
I have both the original Live Steam magazines and the book. You will enjoy the convenience of the book.

With all those parts already built, it should be fun to finish your Clishay!

Re: Book about precision

I grew up with Scientific American as a reading staple is our house.
I was thinking in graphs by the time I learned to read.
Thanks, Dad!

They are older castings being reintroduced. Molds were made by Ed Yungling in the 80’s.
Thank you, Anthony.
They should be beauties!

Anthony:
Are those pump castings from new patterns, or older castings being re-introduced?
Just curious. They look good!

Re: UP Bigboy 4014 first steam and whistle

Amazing to see #4014 running. I never thought I'd see one of the 8 surviving Big Boys in steam! Steam Heaven!!! Also this year the smallest surviving Baldwin Mallet (compound-articulated) locomotive steamed again after a 15 year resurrection. The 2-4-4-2 Skookum! Restored in Garibaldi, on the Oregon...

Re: Steam Distraction

Ronald: I do do not yet know the provenance of my steam Thistle. With shoulder surgery coming next Tuesday, I expect to have time to dedicate to such research. DOWN time... I am interested in the boats history. I know of 2 other Thistles converted to steam, but neither associated with Tom Stockton's...

Re: Steam Distraction

Very nice. I love plumb bow launches but never thought about a Thistle conversion. I cut my teeth on a Lightning. Ah. Lightnings. Nice sedate boats by comparison to Thistles. But I know from experience that if sailed in heavy enough winds, they will plane too! We used to water-camp with a Family wh...

Nice looking project.

Is a canopy in the plans? That way you could operate it for more than a couple of days in the Oregon summer!

D.
HAHAHA!
Probably not. I have no fear of getting wet in a Thistle.
I wonder if I will need hiking straps?...

Re: Green Velvet oils

So is Green Velvet applied into the cylinders, into the displacement lubricator, steam pump? What is the correct application of this rather expensive lubricant? It is an emulsifying steam cylinder oil that is used in whatever device normally meters oil into the steam lines going to piston devices. ...

Re: Steam Distraction

As for renaming the boat, I would certainly like to do that, but it will keep its name for now, to honor the family that was building it. Their request.
Comes with the territory.
