Re: In pursuit of Flatness.

Yes used the Whitworth process with various lapping plates. Initially milled the plate with 8" fly cutter, HSS was not up to it, tool would fail halfway through the cut, hard spots on the flame cut edge, switched to carbide and was successful to get the surface within approx 3 thou. Five days of lap...

In pursuit of Flatness.

Australian living in third world country where you can't buy a surface plate off the shelf, shipping cost's prohibitive and risk of shipping damage so I made my own.
What a mission!

Re: Gibs & Material

Watch Keith Rucker on youtube making a cross slide Gib for his Monarch Lathe, very informative.
Cast iron would be my choice.

Re: Feeling Bored.

I used two 22mm x 8mm x 9mm bearings mounted 1 inch apart back to back, removing 1 metal shield from each bearing, removed existing grease and oiled with way oil. Virtually no resistance to rotation and moves with the slightest wind speed. The bearings are shrouded in the housing to prevent moisture...

Re: Dead power feed

I had a blown Triac in mine, replaced and working OK.Simple circuit board and not difficult to fault find. First you have to determine if the series universal motor is at fault or the circuit board. Four wires coming from motor, field winding pair and armature pair to enable forward and reverse rota...

Re: planer

Watching Keith Rucker on youtube who is currently restoring a New Haven pre 1900 metal planer, must watch.
I have only seen one metal planer in the flesh, rusting away on a farm in Tasmania.
Love to have one sitting in my workshop, just to watch it operating!

Re: Enlarging Taper in Tailstock Quill--Pros? Cons?

Quill I made.
Honed Tailstock bore to a nice finish, was rough from the manufacturer and machined OD of quill to suit for a good fit.
The centre of tailstock sits 2 thou high, happy with that.

Re: Enlarging Taper in Tailstock Quill--Pros? Cons?

I made a new mt3 quill for my lathe and finished the bore with a roughing and finishing reamer. I doubt the quill is hardened, mine was soft, simply bore out the quill and finish with reamers. You need a lot of pressure on the reamer to remove material. I made my quill out of 4140 and has performed ...

Re: Looking for 4032

A lot of piston manufacturers use Hyper Eutectic pistons. A hypereutectic piston is an internal combustion engine piston cast using a hypereutectic alloy–that is, a metallic alloy which has a composition beyond the eutectic point. Hypereutectic pistons are made of an aluminum alloy which has much mo...

Re: Looking for 4032

Silicon content is the problem with 6061, not enough, too much thermal expansion, JE piston company give a good explanation why they use 4032 for their cast and forged pistons.
