Re: grey iron

McMaster-Carr has both gray iron and ductile iron in billets up to 12" diameter.... It is oversized and is already pickled so there is very little scale. Nice stuff to machine.

Re: Night Running & Lights?

You know that red cab lighting would be good because red does not effect your night vision. Looking back and forth from the cab implements and gauges to the track will make for an amount of night blindness until your eyes adjust. Red lighting eliminates that. Make your cab a 'red light' district...

Re: Engine stand

Yep, Modified one of the HF lifts and it has no problem with the RGS 20. Widened the stance and replaced those little iron wheels with larger ones rated for >250 lbs. Used 3/4 inch angle (flange up) for 'rails'. And Greg is correct; you could not purchase steel to build one for the price at HF. The ...

Re: Need EBT two bay hopper dimensions.

Tristan, You are most correct with your RMI observation.... The arch bar trucks 'look' really great but 'scale' is not what RMI is after but I will reiterate; they look great. Scale - not so sure.... You are going to be turning some heads with your pattern venture for the Vulcan truck casting patter...

Re: Need EBT two bay hopper dimensions.

Similar to this: Ordered a G scale EBT hopper by LBG to dimension but it is not correct... and still need correct measurements. May have to be by eye?

Need EBT two bay hopper dimensions.

OR dimensioned drawings of said hopper car for which I will most happily and greatfully pay an enticing bribe for. This hopper car is similar to any early steel two bay three foot gauge hopper car but the EBT ones are in the era of interest. We would also enjoy a source for Vulcan truck castings in ...

Re: Turning radius

I believe the best way to 'calculate' the minimum turning radius of a specific locomotive is to lay the drivers out (such as the left side drivers) on a plan drawing (from above) in the largest scale that you can with great detail for tread profile. In CAD you're able to do this in full scale. At th...

Re: Ed Perry

Any socialist country can afford a copper firebox; and a total copper boiler for that matter - why be cheap when spending other peoples money? The choice for steel for the outside shell is great though - there must have been an engineer involved somewhere in the craft.

Gee thanks Marty, you caught me goofing off at the camera. Sandy scolded me for doing it and now it's published!
Anyhow, everyone here is very impressed with 'your' engine - The Green Goddess. We will take great care of her for you.

Re: Live Steam CNC Defender

I don't see how a present day machine shop cannot get along without both CNC and 'manual' machines. Although CNC machines can be used as a manual machine but certainly not vise-versa. The versatility of a CNC lathe is 10fold over a manual one basically because of the ability to make minute adjustmen...
