Re: 14 ga. Steel Material cutting

The shears also waste a piece (curl) of metal the width of the blade for the entire cut. I didn't measure its width but it seems like about a quarter inch wide. I hate to throw things away much less waste them. The shears are also not easy to run along a guide for a straight cut. ----bad suggestion....

That's a common mistake many people make - as the OP writes (great story BTW!). So the foot switch is not just for the 'expert' on the drill press....

Re: 14 ga. Steel Material cutting

jlakes85, These shears work pretty well. I tried to resist buying a HF tool but needed a shear in a pinch so bought one. The next better one is a few hundred dollars too... We'll see I guess.... I'm cutting 20Ga 304 SS and figured I would be driving back to HF for a return but so far so good. But a ...

What is the action to get the molten metal from the crucible to the ladle or the molten metal into the sand mold?

Re: The Drill Press Whirlygig

I have often thought that of all the machines we use in our shops, the drill press can get you in trouble probably easier than most all others because it is considered quite simple to use - but so easy to misuse. You have both hands occupied - one on the quill handle and the other on either the job ...

EVGEN, All the best to you with this project. The mallets were always a fascination and the Virginian Railroad (absorbed by Norfolk and Western) had many of them pulling and pushing coal trains. Massive! https://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/selectdocs.php?index=rs&id=897 This was one of their largest loc...

Re: Milk of Magnesia as Anti-Sieze?

We are 'protected' so well by our government, it would not be a surprise if 'white lead' is a forbidden substance. It contains lead and after all, it was probably tested for toxicity by coating a mouse with it for a week to study the effects for shop use.

Re: Milk of Magnesia as Anti-Sieze?

Sounds like a fish story. I was in Naval Aviation in a small squadron working with the E-2 aircraft with twin turbo prop engines and never did I see any MoM being used. There was 'Anti-Seize' used.... I guess if a sailor became constipated the infirmary may dispense some MoM but I'll bet he didn't s...
