Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

thanks RK My new phone finally arrived, so pics sill be coming again. I've cut all of the parts for the second truck frame and discovered Muriatic Acid for removing mill scale. Welding day coming up. I also cut out the remaining 4 equalizer bars. Here I am using the "grinder as a metal saw" method w...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I was a kid at the end of the transition era so F7 and SW1500 was what I remember.

I got the part about the bearings on the bolster sides, but I am still struggling with the center pivot point What is this:

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I have been following that build since I love F7s. So I went back and looked at the pix when you brought it up - and didn't quite get it. Looking again, I am still not getting the center bearing part (big dumb me).. Is it like this? If so, I don't see the advantage, so I must be missing something.

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Call for Opinions: Does anyone see any reason not to build out my bolsters like the cross section below? Bronze Bushings through steel channels with an inner bronze core. Then a steel bolt through the assembly from the top down with a bolt or pin on the bottom. The upper channel will be bolted to th...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

18 ga. I am planning on butt welds but I will probably place another strip of 18 ga on the inside for added strength and rigidity at the weld point. I would lap it if I had a tool that would give me the right bend/crimp for 18 ga. Either way I know I will have to go slow, back with a heat conductive...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Bending Tacos: I finally started work on the cab. I made a bending form for the 1" radius by routing MDF Then made 2 halves of the cab shell. I did not cut the pieces to size before bending. After bending, I then cut the halves to the correct length so that they will match up correctly. I also cut i...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

yes, the headlight pieces is from the 3D printer. It can be smoothed out and used as is since it actually goes inside of a housing, or I could use it as an investment for casting into aluminum. Doing this made me realize that the front headlight has an angled back due to the slope of the hood front....

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Turned another axle today. Getting faster, but still manage to over-turn about every 5th surface. Heat pressed a sprocket and wheel on. My biggest accomplishment was working out the radius for the arc of the roof of the cab, transferring it to card stock, then copying it over to 1/2" MDF for a guide...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

This is what the second version of the spring bottom support looks like. (pretty rough here, but it proves the concept). The slot in the middle rides up and down the side frame. The other ears on the end keep the equalizer bars from getting too close to the side frame. spring plank.jpg The prototype...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Welding Day: Thanks to whoever suggested 6013. My eldest son came over to help. He had never touched a welder before today. After an hour of practice he was laying down a pretty nice weld on a flat pieces of scrap. Given his skill level appearing better than mine, we moved on to welding up a frame f...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I've been cursing the lathe all morning. Trying to drill pilot holes in more pillow blocks, but just couldn't. Took a break and discovered that the lathe was in reverse from a previous operation. Jeez  I did get the slave axle finished yesterday. Now that my head is in the sunshine again, I'll...
