Re: Riverside Live Steamers Spring Meet

The Hunter 4-8-4 and Big Boy are both club locomotives so there is a good chance that one or both would be running Sunday. Brad Bluth told me he plans on running his UP Challenger at the meet but I don't know what day. Of course we encourage all steam locomotives to show up, big and small. The track...

Ken:
Yes, you and Suzie should come down. It would be nice to see you.
I'm sure that there will be many words spoken about Ken Casford at the meet. RLS has become the wonderful club and facility that it is due in no small way to the efforts of Ken.

Re: Riverside Live Steamers Spring Meet

The meet is shaping up to be a good time. Bruno Platzer is coming from Las Vegas and two or three guys from back east, including two Berkshire builders. I've heard a lot of "maybes". Who else is coming?
Wayne Godshall of Godshall Custom machining will be here.

Re: Buzz Sutch- Steel Boilers

Back in the early 70's I spent a lot of time out at LALS working with Buss Sutch at the facility. One time we got to talking about his Atlantic and he made the comment that the engine was probably going to need a new boiler and rebuilding since that was the first 1-1/2" scale engine that he built. H...

Re: Cylinder CL vs Axle CL

Filling the boiler with water certainly contributed some but on modern locomotives where axle loadings were in the range of 60 to 70000 lbs, it could not have been a major item for the difference.

Re: Cylinder CL vs Axle CL

I do not think that the offset in question has any significant affect on either valve events or the forces on crankpins or driver vertical loads, or at least I have never seen any documentation that supports that thinking. Of course that does not mean that it does not exist somewhere. But consider t...

Re: 2017 Little Engines open house

Irene Lewis was a good frined of mine and when she retired she often expressed concerns about whether or not Little Engines would have a good future and be carried on in a positive way, especially given some of the not-so-good iterations that Little Engines went through, even while she was still ali...

Re: Cylinder CL vs Axle CL

The 2" difference in piston rod centerline height and the driver centerline called out on steam locomotive erecting drawings was an allowance made because it was shown that once a new locomotive ran on the railroad with all the associated vibration and movement, the spring rigging would "settle down"...

Anyone Want To build an 1-1/2" scale NKP Berkshire?

I'm going to do a limited run of castings and was wondering if there is any interest out there?

Re: Expanded obituary for Barry Hauge

Barry first Nathan Simplex injector was made with a fabricated body and went on Charlie Dockstader’s under construction 4-10-0 for testing. It worked every time. Here’s a ‘70’s shot of Barry on the left with Truson Buegel and Charlie testing that first Nathan Simplex early one Sunday morning at LALS...
