Re: Santa Fe reefer

Carl, unfortunatly paint mask can only be used once. They tend to stretch and distort during the removal process, plus it would be hard to place middle sections of the mask on the backing just right, just think about the letter "O". How would you place the center back in there exactly perfect. -Kevi...

Re: Santa Fe reefer

Carl, the paint mask is a special low stick vinyl that can be easly removed when you are done. Normal vinyl will leave adhesive residue behind.

Re: Santa Fe reefer

Brian, one more trick to get the paint mask to conform to irregularties on the car is to take a hair dryer and heat up the paint mask and with a brush push the mask into the irregularties.
The car is looking Awesome!

Re: Reefer Project

Yes the reefer will be coming out to the fall meet, as for the American, I am reworking most of the valave gear as it was very sloppy before I put the new boiler on. I am replacing all the bronze bushings with miniture sealed bearing and in the process have to make new bolts for it.

Re: Santa Fe reefer

Brian, next time try reverse paint mask. Where the paint mask is just the lettering. You will apply the lettering color first, apply the stencile lettering, then apply top coat. The bleed through will be a lot less. You will also save time and material by not having to mask off the whole car to prev...

Re: Reefer Project

Carl, thanks for the compliments. I actually used to live in the town where it is brewed. I had the coaster so I could get a close color match plus there was also trim lines I wanted to get on the car but trying to make them proved too difficult. I was able to find there logo online and sent that to...

Re: Southern Railroad PS-4 Pacific Design Discussion

Being a painter if you get the color close know one will know the differance. I have seen color variance charts for a specific color with 15 different shades there are little subtle differance but if you took the two extremes you could notice the differance. You can also take two close but different...

Reefer Project

Well I thought I would do a write up on a project I have been working on and off for a few years. It started a few years back my friend and I wanted to build some reefer cars. Our first car we built we gave away as a raffle prize and to use it as learning tool. We started with the sides we used MDO ...
