Re: Grinding wheel question

I have several of my bench grinders and all but one of my belt grinders (huge G8) on a heavy cart I bought for near nothing at auction years ago. When I have hard grinding to do, rusty, cast iron, etc, I just wheel it outside. It has it's own built in subpanel with one longish 10ga power cord with 4...

Re: Grinding wheel question

My surface grinder is on the opposite side of the shop from all other machine tools, same side as my wood machines. Mine was built with an incorporated vacuum system. When I turn it on, the vacuum runs, so as long as I keep the cast iron catcher adjusted properly, it makes very little mess. The vacu...

Re: Grinding wheel question

Grinding wheels cut by exposing a large number of sharp edges to the part being ground. Hard material rapidly breaks down those edges, making the wheel dull, and rapidly heating the material being ground with ever slower progress. A soft wheel refers to the binding agents, and being soft, when the i...

Re: Which Configuration Would Be Less Prone to Flex???

I also heartily agree with rigid mounting the alternator and adding an idler. I'm planning that on my expedition rig (aka my albatross) due to the high amp loads expected for winch and camp loads. Even without those loads, a 135 amp will squall (or chirp) v-belts just recovering from a cold weather ...

Re: Which Configuration Would Be Less Prone to Flex???

I agree with tying the 2 together making a huge improvement. Some wide spacers would likely make a big difference, but I don't like doing things twice (or more), so working within the parameters as stated I would probably "box" them creating shear planes for rigidity. Flared speed holes added for ex...

Re: Saw cutting lubricants

The only way I would use flood on a saw is if I was production cutting. For home shop use, even when you have quite a few cuts to make, the stick-wax-lube (looks like a full size grease gun tube) is convenient and MUCH less messy. That last is particularly true if you frequently cut long structural ...

Wow, breathtaking. So far beyond my capabilities or experience, I don't even have a good reference to build on.

I misunderstood. I thought you were beveling it the short way. As such, my suggestion was worthless. Sorry about that.

Soft jaws? Trig it out (or WAG) to get the offset step in each jaw, mill into jaw as convenient, deal with warpage.
