Re: Couple of Shorties

Can't wait to see it and its sibling being pulled by the Rutland. BDD...that makes two of us. Might be a while, the Rutland tender is out of service for a makeover right now. Knew there was a leak between the tank and frame. Was not expecting to see so much tender deck rusting and pitting. However....

MORE ON ROOF COVERING Had a couple more items to share regarding the denim roof covering before moving on. Hopefully, we learn from past experiences. Doing the combine roof pushed me to find a better solution for the coach roof. Yes, I did find something. After the denim patches were applied to the ...

Re: Couple of Shorties

HOLD ON TO YOUR JEANS The roof covering was next. Liked the idea that materials were available to simulate roofing paper...whether for a caboose or in this case, the shorty passenger cars. That material was...denim. Went to a fabric store and purchased (4) yards of a medium weight denim...in black n...

Re: Couple of Shorties

Hello Kevin, glad you like the way the shorties are coming together. The problem with "finding the right ratio" of Bondo resin to cream hardener is...by the time you figure that out, the project is almost done. And then when the next project comes along...have to start over to figure out that ratio....

Re: Couple of Shorties

ROOF PENETRATIONS Roof Vent: before the roof covering could be started, had several holes to locate. The first were the screw holes for the roof vents. Sierra Railway #5 and #6 had (2) each pairs of oil lamps hanging from the ceiling. A roof vent was located over each lamp. Will eventually share how...

Re: Couple of Shorties

BONDING WITH THE ROOF For my next trick...it was now time to fill in the gaps between the roof planks. Masked off the clerestory window openings to keep those clean while the next step was underway. Mixed up some Bondo and smeared that into the plank gaps. Use a flexible mixer/spreader to coat the p...

Re: Couple of Shorties

FACE IT WITH FASCIA BOARDS The roof is assembled. The curved roof ends have been sanded and blended into the plywood roof skin. It was now time to "hide" the raw wood edges around the perimeter of the roof. These included the plywood underlayment edges and poplar plank edges as well. Ripped some 1/2...

Re: Couple of Shorties

Thank you Brian...glad to share! The roof ends...knew from the start WHAT would be used to make the curved sections. What I didn't know was...HOW to adequately support the roof end sections. Even now, have an idea how I could have recreated the planked arched ceiling over the end platforms. That wil...

Re: Couple of Shorties

MORE PLANKING Once again, dipped into the planking cut-off box and pulled out any strip of planking long enough to cover either the (4) lower roof end sections or the (2) upper roof end sections. Plank strips were planed to line up flush with the end of the plywood roof skin. The backs of the planks...

Re: Couple of Shorties

GET SOME SKIN IN THE GAME With all the roof ribs in place on the roof frame, including all the end roof ribs, it was time to give the roof some surface area. When buying plywood under layment, there's enough material in a 4x8 sheet to get (1) roof panel, (2) side panels, (2) end panels some plywood ...

Re: Couple of Shorties

MORE RIBS...ROOF THAT IS. With the construction obstacle of assembling the roof ends now a thing of the past, it was time to move on. The end roof ribs needed to be cut and fit. Scrap wood planks would be used to cover both lower roof ends and the center upper roof section. Small, thinner, strips wo...

Re: Couple of Shorties

STILL MORE ROOF FIDDLIN' With the main portion of the roof assembled, it was time to figure out how the roof ends would be built up. The drop down roof end only complicated things. Figured there had to be a way to reproduce this. Pulled out the forming blocks. First idea was to double laminate some ...
