Re: 12" Guage Wheel Standard

Perhaps a credit to the WF&P would be ideal. After all, the members of WF&P came up with this standard a long time ago.

If you view the photo in Australia, is it really upside down?

Re: Little engines 1" line of engines

I can attest to Jim's experience. Many times have I had to go out to the floor to very explicitly explain to the cleaning team members where I work how to properly clean these castings. We have a process database and I spent most of my time documenting all of these very specific notes, along with ph...

Re: Pipe thread sealant?

I use 1/4" wide Teflon tape from McMaster Carr. Easier than putzing around with your 30c rolls of Teflon tape from the hardware store. I always double check my fittings to ensure nothing gets inside a valve body, etc. and always keep the tape one thread shy of the end of the fitting. I think this he...

I'd have to guess whatever the print calls for... :-)

Still surprised no one has tried water jetting these leaf springs. I'll be doing this for my engines.

Re: CAREERS IN METALCASTING

Some of us "youngsters" are in the field already :-) Where I work, a large casting facility for a large automotive manufacturer (read: owned and operated by large auto mfg), about 65% of our engineering team is < 35 years old. AFS is a nice resource to have. I have been to several of their training ...

Re: small amounts of o-rings s/s balls etc

For what its worth, you will probably spend more to find these items in smaller quantities than you would when you have a larger quantity. Besides, it pays dividends to buy the bulk pack, put it in a box marked "LOCO SPARE PARTS" and forget about it... until you need them, at which point you can wal...

Re: Boiler Check Valve Manufacturer?

BTW, in the 1:1 world, was there a valve inline with the boiler check valve? Most locos (maybe all) had a shutoff valve either incorporated in the check valve or between the check valve and the boiler. That's what makes a boiler check valve different from an ordinary check valve. Check valves stick...
