Kind of amazing. I half expected to see only three of your fingers engulfing the siderods, but apparently they are longer than the width of your hand! (or something like that).

In any case, excellent work!

I didn't know steam locomotives could be operated in a Vacuum... After all, we do need air to allow our fires to combust... 8)

I like the idea of extending the stack by a couple feet... wouldn't hurt to try it out as an experiment!

At the Wabash Frisco and Pacific, we have a testing officer, who will test all crews - brakemen, conductors, engineers (both steam and diesel - two different tests), hostlers. The engineers' test was approx 6 pages of answers, and brakemen's test was like 4 pages. Then there are also road tests that...

We'll see. I may be able to -- FLLS has their open house at the end of September, so maybe I can find time to make a trip out there if the meet isn't around then.

re: 2-8-0

Mike, I have the LE 1" 0-4-0 (first engine I ever built) and looking at your drawing, your idea is a good one. You shouldn't have to modify any of the valve gear as the connecting rod would still connect to the #3 drivers (originally the #2's on the 0-4-0) as well as the eccentric crack and rod. I ...

I was unaware that Jack Sessums did such a thing -- I did know that a gentleman from NJLS built a 2-8-0 using LE 0-4-0 components. I am leaving the 0-4-0 valve gear stock, just need to make a new eccentric crank, rod, as well as a new bracket to hold the bits that make the engine go chug chug.

The valve stem is outside of the piston rod, I believe... I would need to check. The 0-4-0 is a Little Engines 1" Scale 0-4-0.

Turning an 0-4-0 into a 2-8-0....

Here's a sneak peek at what my 1" scale 2-8-0 will turn out like...

Comments, constructive criticism would be appreciated. I'm still a little stumped on the valve gear (modifying it), but think I can figure it out...

I googled "louisville, ky zoo train" and got a lot of news stories hits about the derailment -- one included an aerial video of the scene. Looks like they were going too fast, and derailed on the outside of the curve given that the trucks are still near the rails.
