Re: European truck identification

I'm pretty sure that the truck shown was non-prototypical. Certainly not based on anything British Railways or its predecessors had. Could be based on a European design but not one I'm familiar with.
Cheers,
Ray.

Re: Tracks to the Trenchs World War 1 Commenmoration

RMI do a 3 3/4" scale Baldwin 50HP gas/mechanical loco, electric or gas powered. There was one for sale (maybe in WA) on DLS a year or so back.

Re: Tracks to the Trenchs World War 1 Commenmoration

I can thoroughly recommend Roy Link's recent book "WDLR Album" which features a wide variety of contemporary photos of the narrow gauge railways and equipment used behind the lines in WW1. The photos are supplemented by Roy's excellent drawings of all the various locos and rolling stock used by the ...

Re: 2.5 Scale EBT Mikado

It might be worth contacting Rich Yoder as he marketed 1:20 scale models of EBT Nos 14-15 a few years back. They were very accurate hand built brass models built for him in Japan so I suspect he had access to works drawings. www.richyodermodels.com/rym_ebt.htm
Hope this helps.

Re: Water Treatment Targets and Method

Steve, I'm sure I've posted this before but I'm convinced the biggest 'killer' of steel boilers is dissolved oxygen particularly when they are left full (or worse still, drained and damp) between runs. I spoke to LSB's chemist and, whilst it may be an excellent product, he confirmed that it contains...

Re: They just don't get it

I guess I was lucky when I went to my first live steam club (at age 13) as the 'good guys' outnumbered the old grouches about 3 to 1. One guy Bill Terry God bless him even let me run his engine - a 5"g. 0-4-0 'Ajax' by the end of the day. From then on I was 'hooked' moving on over the years to full ...

Re: Cleaning boilers

Vance, sorry to see that. I assume, from the amount of oxygen pitting, that the water didn't contain an oxygen scavenger. Just filling it with water, even if it's been boiled won't prevent corrosion as the water will still contain dissolved oxygen. Fred, that's interesting. I guess we'll just have t...

Re: "Catherine", a USA "Sweet Pea" engine build

The big advantage of Hackworth gear is it's simplicity but there are two 'trade-offs' as I understand it. The first is that the slides are subject to wear but if they are correctly made should stand many years of our sort of use. The second is that the valve events can be affected by how the engine ...

Re: Boiler design, need simple drawing to visualize.

For a first attempt I would go with a proven design like Sweet William. Drawings and castings are available from Blackgates in England - I'm sure they would sell you a boiler drawing separately if you ask them. As you may know Sweet William is a scaled up version of Sweet Pea and there is a book of ...

Re: Cleaning boilers

I grew up with loco boilers, full-size and model, and was taught never to allow oil or grease into the boiler. The reasoning was that it coated the plates reducing heat transfer and thus causing overheating of the plate and eventual failure. Whether this full-size practice is directly applicable to ...
