Re: Chatter free boring

Have you considered it might not be the bar that's chattering? It could be the material.

Re: Keeping it clean

I have both an air line and a shop vac next to my machine. My air line is turned down to 40 PSI because I don't want to blow chips all over the shop when clean them off the vise and the part.

I still get some on the floor, but a broom and the shop vac make short work of those.

Re: Brass vs Magnesium. Can I substitute?

I would stick with the brass. It's not that much heavier than the magnesium in that quantity, and it's a whole bunch stronger.

Re: Aluminum Milling Services Requested for On-going Product

Good morning Todd, I just saw your post. My name is Steve Seebold. I am in San Clemente, CA and I have a CNC milling machine in my garage. My rate are reasonable and my quality is excellent. I call myself Mid Day Machining because I seldom start before 11:00 AM. I still get in an 8 to 10 hour day. I...

Re: Tools for machining aluminum

Just curious, but what exactly is the benefit of "parabolic" with respect to a drill bit? I have a 1/2 drill that has 10" (or so) of flute. It is what I call "high helix" with more rapid rotation. Makes it more stiff and having more land area, it works great when you need l...

Re: Tools for machining aluminum

I use either 118 or 135 degree point drills. A lot depends on what I have on hand. For special applications, I'll spend the extra money and buy Guhring drills. They're expensive, but they work good. I have a repeat job that requires a 1/8 inch diameter hole that's 4 1/2 inches deep in a piece of 3/1...

That bench top is disgusting. It's way too clean. Don't you ever work out there?

Re: Shop Etiquette

Drill Doctor is made by Darex. It's just the economy version of their drill sharpeners.

I have a 750X Drill Doctor. It's not as powerful as the real Darex Drill Grinder I had in my shop, but it's definitely better than trying to grind drills by hand.

Re: Shop Etiquette

My wife and I have totally different interests. We live in a 2050 sq. ft. house with a 3 car garage. She has taken over the living room, dining room and one bed room. She makes quilts. She has more sewing machines than she can use, but she likes it. I get 2/3 of the 3 car garage, but that's enough f...
