It would be helpful if you listed the dimensions of the collets you have now, length, diameter, drawbar bolt size, etc. Pictures would also be helpful. You should get dimensions from inside the quill as well as it may be you have the wrong size of collets now. Mills when ordered new could be spec'd ...

I really think that a lathe and a mill are basic tools, how would you ever get anything done with out them.

Restrictions such as these would be the first reason NOT to live somewhere.

Marty I guess you can always ship those machines out here and I will keep them covered in chips.

Re: How many steam railroads?

I know where there is a Frisco steam engine sitting all in pieces. I believe its a 2-8-2. The group that started it has abandoned the project and word has it the railroad (whose property its on) wants it gone. The railroad (who has not been paid rent on the building in years) has offered it to at le...

Re: ever a reason not to add a ground rod?

Aluminum wire is one of those things that is just a no-no. It is an ongoing thing right now in commercial and industrial businesses that they are replacing it. Both for site safety and also some insurance companies are demanding it. With thermography you can easily tell how unreliable even a tight c...

Re: How many steam railroads?

I have seen under steam the N&W 611 and 1218 and rode behind both. On one 1218 trip we worked car service on a return leg to the east out of Moberly, MO. I have also seen the UP 3985, the Frisco 1522, and the Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 all under steam. When we were growing up we did alot of traveling ...

Re: ever a reason not to add a ground rod?

BMyers is correct. I have built many services over the years (most were commercial and industrial but the concept is the same) and each and every one of them had to be inspected. Our local inspector is also a grounding junkie. You absolutely want the protection of a ground wire back to the main pane...

Re: ENCO 10X54 Mill opinions

Absolutely positively check for any side play of the quill in the quill housing. This seems to be a virtual given that china built machines are very substandard when it comes to fit and durability of the castings. I know of one 9x49 Enco mill purchased new and not used in a business setting that did...

Re: Machinery Dealers

Whatever they can get out of it. Condition is very important and if you don't know what you are looking at take someone who does. Don't pay good money for wore out chucks and such, I would rather buy a good lathe cheaper and buy new chucks. Size makes a huge difference as well. Small home type machi...

Re: Diesels, Live Steamers and MSLS Meet

Rowland, I don't remember the specific model of transmission in his motorhome. I do know its an Allison or more correctly today is a World Transmission and of course is all electronically controlled. The motorhome also has the PAC brake on it.

I just did a search on the internet on airline funding. I could spend half a lifetime reading thru all the government, industry, and media coverage on just this one subject.

Re: Hurricane and Live Steamers and MSLS Meet

Unfortunately Tom you CANNOT tax a business. They just pass it on to the customer as higher prices. The only way you and I can get out of paying a businesses taxes is by not buying from or using their services. In the case of the airports part of OUR tax dollars are used to support the airports and ...
