Re: Riding a sidewinder

Thanks for sharing, Carl. Nothing can compare to a steam locomotive. I think many of us were born about 50 years too late.

Riding a sidewinder

I meant to post this months ago but somehow it just didn’t get done. Last August, Honey and I escaped the searing heat of California’s Central Valley to Felton, CA., the home of the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad. The Roaring Camp railroad is what I call “user friendly” — there are...

Re: Marker light lenses- availability and sizes?

You can also get GE push button indicator lenses through online sources such as Ebay or some of the electrical supply houses. You chuck them and part off the diameter you need. They are cut on the interior like a Fresnel lens. Here is one source that has some colors for $2 each. These are surplus. h...

Re: Pvc pipe for air ??

When I was re-doing my shop I discovered a PEX that's rated for air. I decided not to use it since it's not commonly available locally while copper is available at the big box home stores and hardware stores.

Re: Pvc pipe for air ??

... it grows brittle over time and can blow apart violently even at moderate pressures. ... At one time I spoke with an engineer at a PVC manufacturer and he said they do not recommend it for air. Personal story: I had PVC air lines in my shop for quite a few years. After a remodel I replaced them ...

Re: Whistles

The rag was such an enjoyment and had such great articles I would not want to remove any of the due respect for those who contributed to LS. It was heart breaking that it went away,,, It's still there and publishing every two months. The current issue contains five construction articles and more.

Hoppercar:
There have been several threads here on whistles. A search will bring them up. I believe that others have mentioned the Mintz whistle as a good one.

Re: HSS vs Titanium vs. Cobalt drills.

As to drill bits, as has been written above, you get what you pay for. Rozati mentions the Drill Doctor. I had one and it didn't work out for me. I could not get the accuracy I wanted, even after calls to Darex, the manufacturer, and them sending me a second chuck. I made my own sharpening jigs from...

Re: Engine stand

Another endorsement for the HF cycle stand. I don't think you could buy the materials to make one for the price of the complete stand. If you can't wait until they go on sale, you can always get 20 percent off if you look around for a coupon (check your Sunday newspaper).
