Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
Well I do have to apologize for one thing that I thought was obvious , I am using cnc mill not manual , so there's no rotary table to tilt . And I could very easily edit and do it all with a ball mill , but like I mentioned it makes for a long run time . I'm only willing to invest so much time , eff...

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
I had a similar thought to that , then my ocd kicked in on the line it leaves in the surface finish of the model . is it a problem for the flywheel itself . nope it sure isn't . It comes down to being a mental and visual issue for me . and not for reasons a sane person would have I get obsessed with...

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
That would be the easiest method , but the problem comes in the price of tools . An endmill with say 2° of taper is easy to come by , and not horribly expensive . Until you add in the needed corner radius . then you go from lots of options to a very few expensive options . My sharpening skills aren'...

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
thanks it does look good doesn't it , to bad looking good is all its good at . ok some conclusions have been made . much like i thought without draft it just doesn't work . i pre heated the mold a little and the first two pours that had poor fillout came out of the mold with a bit of persuasion . it...

Re: Suggestion to secure a crankcase for fly cutting
I have another question .. If your worried about the jug sitting crooked causing problems Shouldn't you be measuring the bore to determine if you actually have a problem ? And then correcting things based on that information instead of inferring there is a problem based on incomplete data . My logic...

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
i managed to get the mold mostly finished this morning . all thats left is to drill a couple holes for handles and make a center pin .
i think it came out pretty nice .
ill heat up some metal and see if it works this evening .

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
no heart attack here , if it works its for me :) i didnt get very far along , i tore the heel off my boot and spent most of the day tracking down a size 13 ee . but i did get one cavity cut . it turned out pretty darn nice , there was a few minutes of terror involved . i did the 3d profiling for the...

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes
I have a 20# pot so I can get threw a few pours . if it works the mold I want to make will be somewhat in the 2.5 to 3 inch range. So it won't be huge either . I'm going to make the blocks out of aluminum , easier to pre heat and for all the more use it'll get wear won't be an issue . I'm a bit on t...

The dumb ideas I get sometimes
Ok I might be a tiny bit over critical with the title .... Like a lot of others I happen to like watching Mr Pete on YouTube , I'm also not usually the envious type but dang it he has one item I want . Namely the lead flywheel mold . I can't honestly say its a practical thing to put time into . How ...

Re: Suggestion to secure a crankcase for fly cutting
Ok so I'm trying to follow along here , your wanting to deck the seating surface for the jugs or barrel as you call it to the the engine case . But here's where you realy have me confused ... Where's this cold clearance at ? Valve / piston ? Piston skirt to the case ? Or piston to cylinder ? I'm not...

Re: Suggestion to secure a crankcase for fly cutting
.006 ? if you have a good clean sealing surface theres no way in heck id try to chase that down . unless your building a super high horsepower engine thats at the very limits of what the cases themselves can take id ignore it . with a timing chain or belt its no where near enough to cause issues wit...

Re: Single Point Threading 101
I seen a hardinge lathe that was set up specifically for threading . The carriage / tool retract stop had a little turret on it with different length buttons . Say you had the lathe set up to finish your thread in 5 passes . on the first part you ran you set the stop turret to the first position . t...
