Re: Engaging Gauges
Not only are sheet metal gauge numbers meaningless, but there are a prolific number of standards to further muddy the waters. Perhaps the USA is finally waking up to the nonsense it's created. In a recent statement, the ASTM has said, "The use of gauge number is discouraged as being an archaic ...

Re: Counterfeit calipers
Recently bought a pack of Bahco hacksaw blades which were cheap online. First stroke of the hacksaw the paint peeled off and the blade jammed in the cut, no set on the teeth. 100 blades in the rubbish bin! When woodworkers want to cut off a projection flush with a surface without marring the surfac...

Re: Angle Plate - Step Block Maker?
Magnetic pickups are fine for ferrous items but otherwise useless. My back won't allow me to reach the floor but, if my arms were orangutan-like I could bend enough to pick things off the floor. To extend my reach, my solution was to buy several 12" hemostats, e.g.... https://www.amazon.com/SZC...

Re: Impossible to search for 3-letter words?
Rather than trying to change the forum software, be a bit more ingenious in constructing your search. Try to search for distinctive words that might appear in an article concerning your subject of interest. An example of this might be searching for "neodymium" to locate a remembered articl...

I have nothing to contribute to the subject. Just wanted to welcome Toolmaker to the forum; we're old friends on another forum.

My old boss had a phrase for that but I can't remember the exact words. I was always guilty of it designing electronic "boxes" for use in the Chem Dept. Something like creeping generalization . Make it do extra things for the "just in case the future" . :-) ...lew... Perfect is ...

Re: A topic for Glenn or Harold re: metrics
Feeble attempts at humor aside, remember that the obvious superiority of the metric system doesn't depend on the fact that we use a base ten number system. In a number system with base N, it's always possible to multiply or divide by N by simply moving the N-point. The features of the metric system ...

Re: A topic for Glenn or Harold re: metrics
A symbol for zero has been around for a long time. The Egyptians had one (nefer) as early as 1740 BCE. The Maya had a zero as a digit in their vigesimal system.
