Many crosshead pumps like this featured some sort of accumulator to balance the flow. This was the large round or cylindrical object on the pump. It provided an air cushion that stored some pressure during the discharge cycle. That might help too?

If I remember correctly, OS turned to models after their original product, Mechanical Calculators (Adding Machines) , became obsolete.

Just a comment; years ago, a machinist at work mentioned that 6-32 screws and taps are the weakest. You have the threads of an 8 or 10 wrapped around a narrow center section. Of course, by that time, I had them all over my loco...

My club has reported that the city of Costa Mesa, CA has asked us to suspend all public events going forward; you know why. We are apparently one of the many regularly scheduled such events that will be affected.

The brake pad area does not figure into this problem. A 1/2 x 1/2 bar or a 2 x 2 bar would brake the same with the same force applied. The area is important for wear and therefore brake life, however. Same as pad thickness.
