Re: Identify the engineer and location
The cars in the photo were were kept at LALS and were stored in the cabinets under the counter/bench top of the original steam plant... which was located on the east side of and adjacent to the 1" turntable. I guess one could say they were the LALS 1" club cars. I don't remember who built ...

Re: Modeltec
I wrote in error... had Smith's name on the brain after reading it. It was George Broad. I talked to him on the phone to get a replacement for an issue I had lost not long before Modeltec went belly up.
Unlike many, I admit to it when I write/say something in error.

Re: Modeltec
Modeltec began in the mid 1980s and was published into the early 2000s. Bill Fitt, published Live Steam and later started Modeltec. Modeltec was taken over by Smith from the Fitt family following Bill's death.

Re: The Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel
Last time I visited the Chattanooga Choo-Choo hotel was the last time N&W 611 ran from Birmingham to Chattanooga back in the 90s. I would usually chase the steam excursions NS made out of Birmingham..... 611, 1218, 4501, A&WP 290, etc. NS used the hotel as the end of the first leg of the &qu...

Re: Gunmetal, etc.....
As Cary Mentioned, Charlie used 7075 for his side and main rods. Charlie also used needle bearings instead of bronze bushings in the rods along with hardened crankpins on his El Gobernador. I left Los Angeles during the late 1980s and wasn't around when Charlie built is CP 4-8-0. But knowing Charlie...

Re: Gunmetal, etc.....
Let's cut to the chase and make it simple.... If you are inquiring about bronze for use as a bearing material for axle bearings, main and side rod bearings, valve motion bushings, etc. First choice would be phosphor bronze. Second choice would be 932 (aka 660) bearing bronze. Aluminum bronze would a...

John Reynolds, Sr., passed away many years ago. His son still lives in the San Fernando Valley and, as far as I know, still has the loco. BTW.... the loco was a 4-4-2 (not a 4-6-2 or 4-6-4). I will get current contact info from John and message you.

Re: 100% SUCCESS
Charlie.... There are a couple of types of Hardinge "machines". Since I don't recall Dave having a Hardinge toolroom lathe, and knowing that he has a Hardinge chucker, I would say he was referring to the chucker. A chucker is basically a multi operation manual production lathe. eight tool ...
