Re: Air Brakes
With the check valve, I don’t see the need for a spring. Remember the valve will just about center it self when the pressures are equal Right? When the are line is higher, it will move the valve to the right, charging the tank and releasing the pressure in the cylinder, When the pressure in the line...

Re: Air Brakes
The logic looks good to me.
I would love to here how it goes !!
that only thing i would worry about is the valve sticking when you need it most
but heck it is worth a try!

Hi UnkaJesse.
Can you do a write up on your foundry setup?
I would really like to get into that, but really don’t know where to start
I worked with it in High School, but hell that’s 14 years ago now
Thanks
Chris

Re: Air Brakes
Hi Bill, I maybe out of line, but you should look at the double acting cylinder setup; this is no triple valve to fail on you when you need it most The system is fail proof. The only moving parts are the cylinders and activation levelers, which you will have on any system. This is the basic system a...

Re: Air Brakes
Hi Scott, has anyone developed angle cocks and glad hands either in 1 1/2 scale or 2 1/2? Go here Has someone come up with a working triple valve? I know one that is trying, but because of the size of the components, they are not reliable the system i use and many others is double action cylinders a...

Re: Using reverse for brakes
Thanks to all for the advice, which I sum up as: It's OK, even prototypical, provided throttle is closed, cylinder cocks open, and forced lubrication to the cylinders. Also you can use some throttle with open cylinder drains if you need a little more slowing,,, (as long as you can keep the drivers ...

Re: One thing you need to watch when using ...
reverse for braking is keeping steam oil in the cylinders. If you aren't flowing steam through the cylinders, you aren't getting lubed. Don't use reverse for braking for extended periods of time. Not always true. I have a double ram feeding each cylender direct. Your statement only holds true IF yo...

Re: Using reverse for brakes
Many years ago I was driving an Alen 10 Wheeler that had weak brakes. On a down grade with a loaded train I applied brakes... and they didn't work. So I put the engine in reverse and applied some throttle... nothing really happened because the "D" valve lifted. Oh yea... I was going reall...

Re: Using reverse for brakes
Good Morning John IM not sure why you would worry about using a little bit of steam to run the brake cylinders to stop or slow down your lookie. But the proper way to retard you speed using the Johnson bar is to the following steps 1) Close throttle 2) Open cylinder Drains 3) Pull the Johnson bar to...

Re: Welding Class
Will, when you buy that electric welder, get yourself a Miller ACDC machine if at all possible. ... Jesse I'm looking that way if I can afford it. I had hoped to go for Miller or Lincoln, or Hobart.I do know that I want a wire feed unit if possible. It just seems a lot less hassle for some of the s...
