Jack:
Really fun to see your progressive construction using silver soldering. My favorite method for complex parts.
Good old hand cutting and filing. Usually faster than using a CNC mill for one-offs. And I've done both methods...

Re: Stephenson valve system

Emfinger: Good to hear the boiler is off the frame. Rebuilds and repair will be SO much simpler that way. Last year I machined new valve gear for an acquaintance's Ten Wheeler project. It was simple with the bare frame. Pic attached. Keep us informed on your progress. RussN IMG_3704.JPG IMG_3705.JPG

Re: Project: N&W class J on 5"gauge

Congratulations Chris!
Good to see steam after such a long construction project.
More work to go, but it should be fun to do.
Keep posting your work and successes!

Re: tie work

True in my experience.

Tie tamping machines usually have 8 tampers that are slid into the four corners of each tie/rail location, both rails.
The tie centers are not tamped. Train weight can break the tie in the tamped center, if the rail locations are not tamped.

Re: Stephenson valve system

One of my Pandemic Isolation Tasks (PITs) was to R&R the well-used and now-sloppy Stephenson valve under my Allen Ten Wheeler. I machined new clevises and pins, hardened them all, and enlarged worn holes for matched diameter pins. The slop is all gone now and I am slowly working through the syst...

Re: Prototypical looking hydrostatic lubricator?

The logging locos I ran all used Detroit lubricators: 3 outputs for most locos, and 5 outputs for the Mallets. We always carefully followed the draining protocols before opening them up to refill, and never got showered. We could see the stains on the cab roof where other operators made mistakes. Th...

Re: Fixing the electrics in my old German mill Ruhla 250/710

I read your reports with interest! Having retired from the job as Maintenance Manager for the 1960-vintage Seattle ALWEG Monorail Trains, I became well aware of relay logic used in machines. During my tenure, both Monorails were restored and rebuilt to make them reliable again. That involved restora...

Re: Successes and failures on the WC&OV

When you steam and run the locomotive again, make sure the lubricator is working, and lubricating the slide valves first! My Ten Wheeler had a failure of the mechanical lubricator to the right side only. The valve gear rocker arms on that side ended up damaged. This was caused by the huge increase i...
