You've just done "line boring" on a simulated Vertical lathe . All that's different is a "steady rest" in place of a tailstock center.

Sheech! It's "raw material". Do you expect the steaks from the butcher to be already grilled?

Re: Split Cotters
They aren't quite as "simple to make" if you cope the ends of cotter to the shaft your clamping. I've done that for the new ones I've made for a Bridgeport quill. I feel that is a better (less marring) thing. It does mean setting up and boring to the right radius.

And while you're at it make some with 5/16 and 1/4 threaded holes to fit the slots. They come in handy often.

Re: Making carbide tipped boring bars
If you haven't caught Robin Renzetti on youtube, you should. He does some incredibly precise work. Here he makes his own carbide-tipped boring / internal grooving tools. He makes them so precise that he can swap them out on the CNC and keep going. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjQ5pOkCeW0 Steve I...

Re: Dead soft Aluminum
I think that McMaster 1100 stuff would be the ideal but all I need for ever would be a 3 or 4 ft., a 50 ft roll would be overkill :-) All the cans and like has been tried in the past and is way toooo hard . I don't "do" any welding even Oxy Acet. so that annealing is out. As to how much ma...

Dead soft Aluminum
I have a small piece of the stuff but am going to need several square feet at least. It's about .005" thick but would like some even thicker if possible. The stuff I have is like very thick Food wrap foil . I want to use it to cushion the knurl when I hold a bunch of parts in the lathe chuck to...

I was thinking the same thing. If the "magic" word is "Stainless" just use some other BS terms like the alloy words and numbers to confuse the silly consumers. Then there is always the magic word "Billet".

Re: Brand New Smithy 1340 Max
Ah ! Just what I've been looking for. :-) Our local organization has one of these (I think it's the same model at least it says Granite on it) and we already have other lathes and a Bridgeport etc. so want to sell it and invest the space and capitol in some other more needed machines. So I have been...

I sounds like he was trying to put the insert in without taping the hole first.

<If I use a carbide spot drill, will it stay on location, or will it "skate" on a slippery brass surface?>
It wont "skate" as far as the play in your spindle bearings .
