Re: Oversize For Grinding Finish size

Yes, warping occurs easily on shafts. It mostly comes from chilling the shaft incorrectly. when dunking it in oil ect. ALways, Always induce the shaft vertically into the bath to reduce or eliminate linear warpage. Rich PS You see this when guuys swirl the shaft/rod in circle 8's in the pail . It ma...

Re: Bifocal safety glasses

I use 1.50 for computer work and for seeing my work on the lathe, but I can't read my micrometers or plans/books with them - need 2.50 for that. Can anyone recommend a good rugged pair of bifocal safety glasses? Steve Rather than getting new glasses , look at the McMaster Carr link that was posted ...

Re: Electric water pump install questions

Perhaps fellows, we are over thinking this ?

Re: New Gear Tooth?

Kitty liter is clay and a great insulator
The reason to toss it into the kitty litter is that way the Cast iron does not become brittle ( which it will do if chilled too fast)

Kitty litter or sand will give you the slow cooling desired

Re: Drilling holes at an angle

Short answer is No, It's one thing to burn through 1/2 " of steel , but the 30 degrees means the cut will vary in thickness from 1/2" to 1" and then back again that means the torch has to handle variations in thickness while moving (Variable heat requirements) and that usually means &...

Re: Drilling holes at an angle

Two different animals here. The Part is vertical, but is it loose for drilling, or is it mounted already Is the 33 degree angle from vertical or horizontal ? Or even Horizontal but at a 33 degree side angle ? Makes a HUGE difference IMHO Rich One good method involves a ball endmill (4 flute) but I w...

Re: How long to heat soak?

, well if the pins are 1 " , then you will gain .0028" Soak time is just needed to get the part to 550 and that depends on method of heating Hot air is slow- compared to contact or direct conduction. Put a steel plate in the oven ahead of time and when you set the wheel on the steel, it wi...
