Re: Air Compressor Governor
Hi daves1459, All you need is what is called in the UK a 'limit valve' set to release if air pressure from the pump gets above the required pressure. With air it will be the otherway round to the limit valves used in miniature on vacuum brake equipment which is pretty much standard in the UK in 7.25...

Re: Hunslet draughting issues
Unfortunately James you have probably confused matters! One must be rather wary of one person's magic results when applying it to other different locos. UK ME magazine is littered with such magic solutions! All fail to meet the fundamentals. Jos has shown how the chimney performs quite differently t...

Re: Hunslet draughting issues
Hi Fred, For a 7/16" blast nozzle ID you need to sleeve the bottom of the chimney tube with something like 1/2" thick tube. 16swg will be far too thin. You really ought to be thinking of turning down probably something like tube 2 1/2" diameter (OD) 1/2" thick in wall thickness t...

Re: Hunslet draughting issues
Hi Fred, The Don Young Hunslet Quarry loco design has balanced slide valves with the exhaust going through the backs of the valves then one long blast pipe requiring only one hole for it in the base of the smokebox (at least this is how the 5"g version is). Without wishing to disagree with Ray,...

Re: Question for the European live steamers
Hi cp4449, I have nearly finished a 1.0625" scale Terrier, Stepney. The drawhooks will be ok, but not the coupling links. GT Thomas worked out in ME some years ago the theory and stress maxima for our scale drawhooks. My rear drawhook is extended as per fullsize back to the rear axle. It would ...

Re: Hunslet draughting issues
Hi Fred, I typed out an email to you and a response on here then my computer froze this morning and lost everything. I will start again tomorrow evening and try and remember what I typed, though I have all the dimensions written down. The blast nozzle needs to be larger, and the ID of the lower part...

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
Hi Fred, Your lovely Milner Hunslet (which I have watched in action on youtube) has a few peculiarities. Very long steam passages between cylinder and steam chest, and an indifferent valve gear which we have discussed together on the modeleng.proboards thread some time ago. You have a long chimney. ...

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
Incidentally, The RHDR 15"g locos designed by Greenly, and his 7.25"g LMS 'Royal Scot' design do not follow the Greenly 1:3 and 1:6 tapers, and were all indifferent steamers. The RHDR loco have all been divested of Greenly errors over many years, and are now quite different to how original...

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
Henry Greenly was indeed a very complex and awkward guy! He had flashes of brilliance, and yet was 'blinkered' in many other respects. All evidence suggests he was a bit of a prima donna, and not easy to work with (an understatement). He fell out with anyone who questioned him. He fell out with Capt...

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
This thread is one of the most important on here and is bookmarked by me. Jos's book is now reprinted in the UK, and is giving much food for thought for those interested in this important subject. Do please buy a copy! To go back to the original topic, and this relates to Bryce's going off at a tang...

Re: Steam cylinder stroke
Hi Jim, In the UK, the 5"g Sweet Pea is quite popular as a beginner's loco. The drawings are quite good, there is an excellent construction manual, and Blackgates provide a very good service. I am not aware that the drawings show 4.75" gauge alterations. I think in miniature locos one of t...

Re: LBSC locomotive "Ancient Lights"
the youtube clip posted by Bob of Will's Canterbury Lamb is on the Bournemouth track (UK). LBSC designed and built quite a few single wheeler locos in 3.5"g. the most famous is probably his 3.5"g LBSCR 'Grosvenor', for which sadly he never published the drawings. if i remember correctly LB...
