Re: 12" working railroad

At least you can count to 5. Light duty will pass. Getting a temporary disability with a hand will make you take stock of how good you really are. I feel for you having been jammed up a few times.

Re: Question regarding graphite crucibles

If you want to use such carbon crucibles for small doses of melt, one theory is to dip them in ceramic slip such as used for casting figures and drying them out to coat the carbon and prevent burning. Slip for ceramics can be reconstituted many times if it dries with a bit of water a drop of dish so...

Re: Small Diesel engines for motive power

I will warn that rock or glass wool is too fine and either breaks up or plugs up. Better off with a screen type of baffle that offers alot of flow without restriction to the exhaust. It will hush things quite a bit. The more open the longer the run must be but keep the back pressure low to not choke...

Re: Small Diesel engines for motive power

When it comes to mufling thevsound of small engines, a can of some sort, be it tubing or square tube stuffed with screen wire and vented out is hard to beat. It takes the sharp pulse out of the exhaust and softens it to a whoosh cutting the explosive noise way back. the larger problem is getting rid...

Re: Dog Lover Lament

We are animal people and there is a huge difference in the effort and pedigree of owners. I have a liking for large dogs and have been the partner to 5 Great Danes. One was not counted as he was a wild thing and I could not reach his mind. So he went back to his rescue organization. Titan, an un-nam...

Re: Stump Bucket for Small Tractor?

I think you will be better served by breaking the roots and pulling the smaller stumps. A stump bucket is a brutish animal and quickly passes severe loads to whatever it is attached to with the results being bent and broken parts. Better off to destroy the root system and anchor points first. I inte...

Re: Advice on Toilet Caulk?

Put your hat at half mast. Nobody can caulk neatly around a toilet, there is not enough room for the gun to swing and get the angles you need at the speed you need to be neat. i use the shape of a popsickle stick and wipe it off with a rag and return to draw the bead into some semblance of neat. In ...

Re: Advice on Toilet Caulk?

In all honesty, a good tub and tile caulk of the silicone variety is what I use to deal around the base of a stool. The unit must be mounted firm so as not to move and that means the wax ring must be in good shape too. In some homes fat posteriors move the unit and break it loose, and they can seep ...

Re: Grease Gun v. New and Improved Grease Gun

I go through the ritual greasing twice a year. In another month, right before it gets cold, and in the spring, just as it gets warm. The exceptions are the newer equipment and stuff I have not used in a while. I use black lith as standard. Greasy hands are what shop rags are for. I have to buy new o...

Re: Small Diesel engines for motive power

I had built a speeder/railtruck with a pancake lawnmower engine of the 3.5 variety. Pweer was through a slipper clutch and it had about a 12 inch punching for a shaft flywheel mounted on the blade bolt. It was and E-Z start model, that means the valve timeing overlaps and leaks for a compression rel...

Re: Sand or Concrete for Tractor Ballast Box?

Not all sand is the same, White silicatious sand is the lightest, black sand that is magnetic is iron based oxides and quite heavy. So there can be a variance on a full box of any sand because of content. Ask gold miners about wash plants and getting things to stick or not. Gold being heavier than l...
