Re: Building a locomotive from erection drawings

All this cracks me up. The brains at the LALS many years ago told me that the Cab Forward I planned to build would not work. Cylinders were too big etc. Several years later I showed up at the LALS with a cab forward that I built in a 1 car garage with a 14 inch lathe, a horizontal mill and a welder....

Re: GS-1, finishing up the hard way

I 'm so proud of my son. He is doing a fantastic job on his GS 1. I told him when he's finished Im bringing over my Cab Forward for him to super detail. Im going to make a lost wax mold for his SP style blow down cocks and anything else he needs for his engine. I dont know if he mentioned I made his...

Re: Pilot truck bearings

It appears there is a question about the needle bearings taking a thrust load. I use Torrington thrust bearings and thrust washers to take the thrust load. I would say only about .030" end play would be enough. I've also used this system on drivers. Works well. Of course the end play should be ...

Re: Pilot truck bearings

I should have mentioned the individual axle boxes can be bored through and seals the same size as the bearings can be pressed in on the inside. Grease fittings can be installed on the bottom between the seal and the bearing. The thrust bearings and washers can be recessed into the axle boxs. The thr...

Re: Pilot truck bearings

I have been using thompson case 60 shafting for the axles usually 1 inch o.d. on the larger engines. I use the needle bearings both for the running surface and thrust with the hard washers on both sides of the thrust bearings. Why mess with hardening and grinding 4140 when you can buy already harden...

Re: It's Official.... UP to Restore Big Boy!

Contrary to what was said earlier the Big Boy has a 150 square foot grate area. The SP& S 910 & 911 4-6-6-4 also had a 150 square foot grate area and burned oil. Im building a 1.6 model of one. I have the drawings for the oil burning equipment. As far as I know they were succesful. Should ha...
