Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?

Thanks again for the information. It's getting clearer to me, that I'm in way over my head. At his point I surrender. Defintion of surrender: To drop your arms and join the winning side. A. I'm now looking for a shop to make me a length of this worm or B. find an original replacement part. Thanks fo...

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?

Thanks Glenn and thanks Don. I saw a you tube video of a hand crank made for a SB 9". It slid into the bore at gear end and looked simple to make. On the other hand, I do have a Richmill programable CNC rotary indexer and a Rockwell mill. Hobs are way too expensive and I don't want to make one....

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?

Glenn, thanks for the kinzer site, it is very helpful. My lathe's coarsest setting is 4tpi but in the Popular Mechanics article found on Kinzer, it says to set the gears to the lead not the pitch and the chart on page 1 has leads listed as low as 1 1/2 to get 4 1/2 threads per inch, so it looks like...

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?

Please see photo attached. Now that I've learned enough to make me dangerous, let's have a look at the bushing in which the part I'm trying to make will theoretically fit. do we have a triple threat, I mean thread here?

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?

As previuosly posted, I've already cut a 5 tpi sample (in aluminum) with the back gear and it looked like slow motion to me. No offense taken, as I have no real abilities here, that's why I'm on this web page. The truth is, I'm just stubborn and a little nutty. If I could buy this I would. Could I b...

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?

I've been on a bunch of UK sites but am not sure about that one, have to double check. Here's photo of the rubber casting. When I line up my protractor paralell with the bore, against the outside edge and the arm paralle with the tooth, I get 27 degrees and am assuming that that is my helix angle. T...
