I'll see about digging out that HO scale Walthers diaphragm. I agree with what you've said here Dave. The same applies on any scale cars, but is magnified as the scale (and weight) goes down. One can fold, iron, and starch the canvas to get the set until it is installed. You can buy the stuff at you...

Send me a PM or email and I'll dig up a diagram of how the Walthers HO scale folded diaphragms are done.

Many Pullman cars I've seen indeed used canvas, painted to match the car. There are several diferent ways the manufacturers attached them and made them moveable. It all depends on how much work you want to do and whether you are modeling a prototype. Still, anything is better than nothing. If not ad...

Boring
Cut a tapered bore into an aluminum pilot wheel for my 2-1/2" Goose a few years ago. Machined four wheels, only tapered one. Didn't know it until I pressed it onto the axle. Well, you can imagine the result. It is sitting on my desk in front of me holding my coffee cup. I was heartbroken, These...

I see what you mean, Bill. I had not thought of it that way.
I guess an even more basic question would be that if a lathe has a worn bed, that does not mean that the bearing surface for the tailstock is worn by an equal amount?

I don't have the figures with me at work, but it would be at minimum the axle boxes and such for an Allen, so what, around 3/4"?

Jeff,
In the 15 plus years I have been exposed to the hobby all I have ever seen folks do is blow down the boiler then spray wash with kerosene.

So, If one is concerned with boring a taper with a somewhat worn bed, can one get better results drilling to a close tolerance then reaming using the tailstock? Assuming of course that the bore is something that can be acheved with a store-bought sized reamer.

My favorite treatment for this flying hell is B-12 Chemtool carburetor cleaner. Even comes with a little red tube to concentrate the spray!
Just don't get it on the wife's car!
