Re: Vactra 4 vs Vactra 2
Vactra oil is not going to happen, so its the Lucas or more of the chainsaw oil I've been using. The latter works well on the table ways but tends to run off the vertical ways.

Re: Plugging holes in aluminum
I assume the holes aren't threaded. You have .25" holes on 1.75" centers, giving you a 1.50" inner edge to inner edge distance. You need clearance holes for M8 on 1.93" centers. An M8 needs a .35" clearance hole giving a 1.58" inner edge to inner edge distance on the ne...

Which causes me to consider Lucas engine oil additive for the knee on my Avey: it's supposedly ISO 1500 and it is *way* stickier than chain saw oil.

Re: Cam Lobe Staining
Ok, continuous. The point is that if the cam follower is always touching the cam it is doing its job.

Re: Cam Lobe Staining
If the staining was due to the cam follower was making intermittent contact the high spots would be shiny and the low ones stained. If it was making no contact at all surely the machine would fail to run properly. Thus if the cam is uniformly stained and the valve operates correctly the cam follower...

Re: Cam Lobe Staining
I think that is the oil additives coating the steel, which is exactly what they are supposed to do. What do the cam followers look like?

I sometimes do that too but remember that 90 degrees isn't *exactly* 90 degrees (unless you have an accurately set detent). When you do that you are turning an unknown taper.

Re: Railroad Speeders or Putt Putts
You *could* do it the way we did in the 60s on the abandoned DSS&A line in the UP: let a bit of air out of the tires of your 50s sedan, get it on the rails, and off you go. Tracks fine. Just don't touch the wheel and watch out for fishermen on the trestles.

Re: I Hate Coyotes
We had a brief raccon infestation last summer. Eliminated them by the simple expedient of discovering and blocking their method of jiggering shell corn out of the gravity box. Once that supply was cut off they went elsewhere. During their reign of terror they knocked over (but did not eat) the crack...

Re: Does Motor Oil Corrode Brass?
I intend to use a mixture of Lucas engine oil additive which is essentially ISO 1500 mineral oil and enough GL-5 synthetic to bring the viscosity down to about 680. The gearbox contains a 6:1 worm and a 4:1 spur gear. The worm will be fully immersed and the spur gear point of contact will also be im...

I'd tap the holes and use Loctite.

I almost always use some sort of mandrel with PVC pipe. Even a wooden plug helps a lot. You can also use segments of aluminum pipe under the chuck jaws as load spreaders.
