Re: Pool pump duty motor
Note that the label on the motor specifies: "Mount horizontal with vents down." 'Could be a limiting factor too. RussN I would almost bet the horizontal, vents down thing is to keep water from a leaking pump out of the motor over any other reason. I'm willing to sit corrected if my thinki...

Re: The price of steel
Until we as a country start mining the raw materials on our own soil again, the prices will remain up. We import much of the ore needed for steel and aluminum production. Shipping costs have also gone through the roof, which is partially to blame for the steel increases. Prices have started to drop...

Re: Way Protection
I like my Aussie made Blundstone slip on boots. Not cheap but comfortable for me and it is what I wore for the last decade when I was working. I'm way past wanting to lace up footwear. :) The broomsticks also lend themselves to putting the chuck on a notched rack for storage. A little like the weigh...

Re: Way Protection
I have a suggestion for you that I use. In addition to your plywood way protector, if you put a broom stick or rod of aluminium in the chuck and tighten the jaws such that it is 6+ inches into the spindle and the same towards the tailstock, you have a handle that makes it easier to carry and slide t...

Re: Newbie getting in over my head?
Sorry I didn't know that wasn't universally understood. The neighbour's machine was branded Robot. Never run across another anywhere else. I supposed if I had said the neighbour used his Robot to help me you guys would have really been confused.

Re: Newbie getting in over my head?
When I bought my Grizzly lathe and mill I rented a lift gate truck. Grizzly put them in and I used the lift gate to lower them to the ground in front of the garage. Rolled them into the garage carefully on lengths of black iron pipe, my pipe clamps from my woodworking hobby. Assembly was with a hydr...

I've gone the other way and cut the taper off to make a short bottoming tap.

Re: Concrete bench suggestions
Mr Ron concrete foundations for small machines may not be in common use but the place I worked until retirement had them under most of the heavy mills. They even had a Swiss made machine with a working length of over 60 feet, that had 80 pilings in the ground, topped with a rebar cage, with at least...

"Harold: If you dry blocks with an air hose, are you not using air that contains some water from the compression phase? and would not the water cause blocks to rust?"
Just can't win eh Harold?

Re: Gage Block Care & Feeding
You wipe the oil off with a soft dry cloth when you want to use them. Leave the soap and water in the bathroom.

Re: Gage Block Care & Feeding
Acetone will remove oil and wax but it will leave a chemically clean surface that can rust quickly so I should have said to coat them with a light oil after cleaning. Stoddard solvent is the main ingredient of solvents more commonly named by their maker. Varsol by Esso, Shellsol by Shell, etc. Regin...
