Re: A boring question..

Boring Between Center on Lathe.... Guys, I am confused. Why does anyone ever bore cylinders on a lathe? If you are setting up a single point tool in the headstock of a lathe vs a single point tool in the mill head the result is the same right? I can indicate mill head where the lathe is kind take it...

Re: Need Some Help

A friend of mine made his by milling it down from round. Go to Daveley.net I think there is an explanation of how he did it there.

Re: Duplex steel (grade 2205) for Steam loco boilers

Does anyone know what material Art Olds used for his 2-8-0 boiler? Engine is now owned by Bill Bryan of Georgia. I Swear he once told me is was scrap drops that came off of some of the ships in Pensacola. It was something exotic.
Any ideas?
Gene Fontain might know... Is he still around?

Re: Cylinder studs vs. cap srews

Cylinder studs vs. cap srews Another item to remember is alignment issues. I am by no means advocating using a threaded fastener (stud, cap or otherwies) as an alignment mechanism (Henrickson's Jig and Fixture Design, would tell you this is a no no). However, imagine if you will trying to pick up a ...

Re: Articulated Design Question - Front engine weight

Check this out. Some one already got there in 1" scale! Caption Reads "D&SL 2-6-6-0 #217 Working 1" scale models of prototype equipment taken in 1998 at the Fall meet. This is with yours truly at the throttle! The locomotive was finished and owned by Bruce Saylor of Pennsylvania.&...

Re: New to the Forums - My Project

Maybe its a petticote issue... Somewhere I read that the petticote determines which flues the draft is predominantly forced through. The higher it is, the more draft is rolling through top flues, the lower it is, more draft through the bottom flues. Perhaps the petticote is too low. Might even have ...

Re: New to the Forums - My Project

John S, Consider the below comment from the thread about large flue size. It may be worth while to plug you lower flues. If memory serves, the Mcdonough 0-6-0 at SERM had many patches on the bottom of its boiler barrell. I wonder if this was from a lack from washout provision and the boiler is strai...

Steam Turret Question

I have seen people do the same thing on the mich cal shay also. That is tap appliances turret and throttle from this dome (one on top of the t boiler) Little bit of a fudge, but deffinately makes the build and maintenance easier.

Re: Articulated Design Question - Front engine weight

Good eye Doug, What started this whole thing is the work done by Konrad in F Guage on Cumberland Engineering web site http://www.cumberlandmodelengineering.com/KonradGallery.html The Denver and Salt Lake 2-6-6-0 makes for a nice small articulated that would be capable to run on most any tracks. And ...

Articulated Design Question - Front engine weight

Articulated Design Question - Front engine weight I recently got interested in a 2-6-6-0 prototype and got to wondering about the lead engine weight. How is weight of the boiler transfered to the front engine on an articulated? That is, if you have a huge boiler, the only fixed connection is at the ...

Re: Steam Turret Question

Steam Turret dry pipe Don't forget the old cheat of running the turret dry pipe outside of the boiler from the back of the dome through the cab wall. I am not sure if it is original, but RGS 20 has this steam lead on it. Not as pretty, but should be really easy to implement. Just tap the dome, could...

Re: Feed Rate

Feed Rate Stop guessing. Machine work is not guess work, nor is it alchemy. If you need a decent determination/start point of speeds and feeds there is an endless pile of reference material available. Industrial tooling metalurgy hasn't really changed much over the last 100 years; High speed steel a...
