I just saw this clear example of a spider in use and thought about this post. So here it is for anyone who has not seen one before.

I agree on the 4-1/2 with cut wheel, I use mine all the time too... And I already mentioned that they are not all the same, not even at HF. In fact, there are at least 3 different variations of the basic HF 4x6 saw alone. I have what I believe to be the best of the lot (from HF) and, frankly, I see ...

One comment on the table for the vertical use... I felt just as you do, that I needed a decent sized table and fence/protractor rig too. However, I didn't have anything suitable to make such a table for my 4x6, so I decided to bide my time until proper material presented itself cheaply, and instead ...

Look at Ellis Saws. The 1400 or 1600 is right up your alley, but run from $2k+. I've just about talked myself into a much older 1500 at about half that cost (but had been partially reworked and in very good condition). However, I feel confident in saying that, at least from my perspective, you can't...

I do all manner of cuts vertical. Whacking a corner off a plate to speed up rounding on the grinder is common. Cutting a flex slot. Cutting something that doesn't fit in the vise/table config (too short, strange shape, flat plate on an angle, etc.). Cutting curves and compound/intersecting angles. A...

The problem with the G9742 (which has some very good points) is that it does not do vertical. That makes it a non-starter for me. I use mine in vertical mode far too often (probably close to half the total time?) to give that up.

Yeah, imagine a 1/4-1/2" aluminum bar hanging out the back of a 1-3/8 spindle bore. Now that's going to want to spin about 2k rpm or more, depending on what your doing. At best it's going to be rattling around, more like making an "L" if there is much hanging out at all. But now mount...

For heavy aluminum and typical HSM saws, it's pretty much tough to get too course. On my little saw, the most I can go is a Lynox 1/2" x 8-10 pitch, and it's barely adequate for the 1"-3" aluminum plate I cut from time to time. Works great on 1/2-1" though.

My point exactly. A hand full of carbide for main stream bought "as needed" or when found cheap, then added to "as needed" (point being "as needed") is fine and dandy when you have something abrasive or very hard. But you can't beat the general purpose utility of a few ...

B. Never never NEVER! grind on the side of a regular grinding wheel because you greatly incresase the risk of having a wheel fly apart possibly with serious consequences. Only grind on the side of a wheel specifically designed for that purpose. Perhaps something has changed in the intervening decad...
