Simple soft soldering is more than enough for this application where copper can be used. Look at IBLS www site for bill van brocklin'...

Re: Odd question
If every dimension on a locomotive was held to ±.0001" the engine would run perfectly, assuming it was dimensioned properly. ...and each locomotive would cost as much as a Boeing 747. :D Chuckle! True, that, but learning proper terminology is free! H and who would determine the dimension &...

Re: fuel topic
good luck with penn coal. they are now shipping only by the RR car load, SO IF YOU WANT 20+ tons, you are good to go. Gone are the days of a few bags or pallet load. They WERE our source of Pocahontas coal for decades.... venus tile and marble only sells what they have, they are not a mine / major d...

Re: A spindle oil question
If it is ball and roller bearings only...it is a good point.
However if sleeve bearings are involved, as may be in a lathe, or in my case old sleeve bearing pedestal grinders as well, prefer to stay with specific spindle oil.

You and me both.
Get some cutting oil while you are at it, and some drills.
I keep a list on my computer ....

Re: Repair Montgomery Wards Powr-Kraft split-phase motor with Thermotron protection
Any motor that has "smoked profusely" is going to require a visit to a motor rewind shop before it should be considered usable.

Re: A spindle oil question
Spindle oil is just that...and generally not available at your local auto parts store. 10w is very commonly used in machine tools, but I doubt that 20w will hurt anything. Do a Google lookup on oil viscosity for a primer on what it means. You do NOT want a multi viscosity motor oil for machine tools...

Re: methanol burner
Maise is an LBSC 3/4" 4-4-2
Plans are available from reeves in the UK last time I looked, as well as Kennions (and others)
Reeves 2000 Google will get you there.
Or just "Maisie steam locomotive" will pop up dozens of sites.

Re: methanol burner
my thoughts exactly, which is why I started this thread -> to avoid unnecessary speculation... theoretically, variations of this burner will work with anything combustible. I can say for a fact that 'lamp oil' or anything that has a significant percentage of water in it will not work....or is more o...
