Re: Cab roof input wanted
I will second the slot method, the engine must be comfortable to operate, and easy enough to get to the controls (throttle, brakes, jbar, etc.) I'm going to third the "slot" style. I've run a lot of folk's locomotives over the years and those with full roofs are always the most uncomforta...

Re: New to the Forums - My Project
That scratch-built smokebox door looks great! Steve Thanks Steve! I've started on a set of grates for it which I should be able to finish up tonight. Then I'll start working on getting the boiler on the chassis and all that fun stuff. I plan on welding a nut to the top of the boiler, right at the c...

Re: New to the Forums - My Project
My boiler is now, well, a boiler! Today was the last day of major work on it. The tubes got rolled in and it got hydro'd. A few leaky stays in the firebox (nothing a ball peen hammer couldn't take care of) and a bit of tapping the plumbing bushings that had distorted when we TIG'd them in. Passed hy...

Re: Getting ready for chassis on air - gaskets
The gaskets I made for steam chest-to-cylinders, cylinder heads, etc., were from 1/64" thick gasket material, like this but from Ace Harware: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SP101A11767S5493167201P?sid=IDx20070921x00003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=SPM3485999702 Cut it to size, punc...

Re: sealing hollow longitudinal stays
Hey guys, this is where you take a huge cream pie and throw it at my face. I cannot even begin to remember why I had stainless longitudinal stays running through my head this whole time. The original conversation I had about it was about six to eight months ago when I was discussing all the material...

Re: Injectors - Who Sells them these days?
Just spent some time with Google trying to determine where this one injector I already have came from. Evidently my father had purchased it somewhere before he passed away, for as long as I've had the Allen mogul parts the injector has been in a little plastic case along with them. Pics of the front...

Re: Injectors - Who Sells them these days?
Howard,
You'd have me as a customer if you make a batch. I've got the one English injector (unknown manufacturer, unknown performance) but would love to have a nice, high quality injector instead.

Injectors - Who Sells them these days?
I know about Superscale and there's a UK seller on EBay, but are there any other people making and selling injectors? Unfortunately I got into the hobby a few years too late and missed out on Ohlenkamp. I know Howard Gorin was making Ohlenkamp-style injectors for a while. Is he still making and sell...

Re: Parting Postmortem
Talk about night and day difference... just got all but the last two stays done tonight without any problems at all. What I did differently: * Spindle RPM up to 300 from 150. * Tightened the gibs on the counpound rest -- zero play in it now. * Moved the QCTP over to the right as far as I could go an...

Re: Parting Postmortem
Perfectly perpendicular, Right? Yes, I usually square up the tool with the chuck face. After I broke the first one I squared it up and then checked it with my dial caliper to make sure it was square. I'm going to have another go at this tonight after tightening up all the gibs on the compound to ma...

Re: sealing hollow longitudinal stays
The three people helping me build my boiler have all used stainless pipe for longitudinal stays in the 10 or so boilers they have built. Mine will have them as well.cbrew wrote: Stainless, not in a boiler!
mine are copper also.
