Re: A couple of salvage machines
The first pic is of a shaper (metal, differentiated from similarly named wood tool). Very handy, very flexible, but about 50 years out of date. I've heard it said that "you can make anything with a shaper, except money", and that's probably pretty accurate. Mills have taken over just about...

Re: Best way to fit a drill chuck arbor?
None that I've noticed. Side note on using keyless to drive hole saws and the like. I generally avoid driving anything that is going to either hammer (interrupted) or require substantial torque using a keyless chuck. That "self tightening" feature can be a real problem, and I've read of fo...

Re: Best way to fit a drill chuck arbor?
I've followed the same procedure of surgically clean, but after placing the chuck firmly in place, bring the end of the arbor firmly down onto some soft material. I've used wood and aluminum. It doesn't take more than a solid thump, and inertia seating the chuck works quite well. And for any but sma...

Re: ID a benchtop mill from a picture
I would say it's just an example of a much derided generic Chinese "round column". Also often called a "mill/drill", as opposed to a "drill/mill". The former leaning more to the mill side than "just" a drill press, the latter being the opposite. Lots of folks ...

Re: The price of steel
Luckily I still have a good stock of the stuff I use most. However, I needed about 8" of 2x4x1/4 structural for a suspension mount I was making and didn't have anything that would work. I got a 4' length from their shorts racks (avoids the partial/cut fees). I nearly passed out when they rang i...

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
It's not so much finances are tight. If it were, I would have to find another hobby. But rather budget's not unlimited, and spending $400+ refurbing the platen alone is taking a lot of money from other projects. Compared to just dealing with the less than perfect platen, and maybe finishing on a sma...

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
I guess I could add that my current thoughts are leaning to one of my earlier ideas in support of the ceramic platen. In sizes 1/8-3/16, the clear ceramic appears to be rather reasonably priced, as well as very flat, smooth, and abrasion resistant. It seems to be almost the holy grail for the knife ...

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
You are absolutely correct. I'm very concerned about durability, at least so far as will cover a "one and done" solution sufficient for my expected usage, gladly going further unless price/effort becomes sufficiently problematic. In most applications I would be very concerned about the sus...

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
I'm also out of my depth here, but wouldn't the tooling plate be comparable to the brake Harold was talking about? I would assume that's also cast, though that may not be a valid assumption, or it may be different alloys/treatment that make it different?

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
I knew it was cast. I may be missing something, but would that be an issue, assuming it's suitable for hard anodize?
Shouldn't be hard to come up with 6061-T6 plate, which I think should be ok as delivered, but problematic should it need ground.

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
Thanks. That may be a viable path. I've run into another snag getting quotes for the Blanchard grinding. Of the shops I've had recommended for small single item jobs at a reasonable price are all booked out and not even taking new (small) orders. The shortest lead time was 3 months. Of the options t...

Re: Refurbish G8 belt grinder platen
Wow! Lots of great ideas I would never have considered. Thanks! I'm not too concerned with lasting another 80 years. I file that under "not my problem". But I would like to be able to get my money's worth of that 5Hp motor when I have big pieces to profile, so it needs to be able to handle...
