Re: Ordered a g0704 mill

12 mm seems more common. But since I don't have the X,Y table I can't say for sure. Grizzly says 3/8ths but there more likely metric. Possibly 14 mm? I ordered my lathe as a full imperial machine and the feed screws and dials are. It's still metric hardware and the cross slide has metric tee slots. ...

Re: Ordered a g0704 mill

Congratulations on the new mill.I spent enough years pushing a truck and seeing how things get loaded it's nice to see there was no damage. My BP clone had about .008" of backlash in the as recieved condition. It was fairly smooth, but after cleaning and adjustments I got it down to about .004&...

Re: Ordered a g0704 mill

With some of that luck it will get delivered tomorrow so you'll have the weekend to get a bit of the clean up work done. :-)

Re: self centrering 4jaw chuck

You could be right Russ, maybe I read what he was meaning incorrectly and it's only the top bolt on jaws he's needing. My small Emco 3" diameter 4 jaw scroll chuck has the one piece jaws so two sets of jaws came with it. It's possible whatever chuck he has doesn't have anything properly stamped...

Re: self centrering 4jaw chuck

Yep Stephans video is really good and I learned a great deal from it ctwo. Making a set of jaws? Myself I doubt unhardened material would stand up for long or maybe at all. Due to the high point loading on the jaw teeth as the chuck gets tightened up then proper material selection will be pretty cri...

Re: Ordered a g0704 mill

Sounds like you have the right game plan to me then. For the cleaning what I did on my Bridgeport clone was double check the bolts holding the feed nuts in place to be sure they were tight. Then I just cleaned them in place. It's a bit of a pita to re-align them with the slide travels if there's no ...

Re: Anyone have any info on this horizontal?

The same name was used for a line of precision small lathes in the U.K. I'd guess almost for sure yours was built in India though. Finding information on a fairly old horizontal that seems to be rare anywhere else is going to be tough. I tried a search and got nowhere. It's very time consumeing to d...

Re: Ordered a g0704 mill

Hope you don't mind a few thoughts Stephen. Got a magnetic indicator base and 1 thou reading indicator? Just unscrew the vertical rod out of that magnetic base, flip the rod upside down and use that in any drill chuck or collet of the correct size. Less time and much more adjustable with the second ...

Re: Advenntures in Experimental Metal Spinning

LOL, nope I meant I was impressed with the whole post. I'm not impressed with thinking about haveing that instrument used on me though. :-) What I have read about metal spinning is the tools and forms idealy should be hardened and very highly polished. Might be something to consider if you've got a ...

Re: Oil leak at spindle on my lathe

Well if your finish hasn't deteriorated then I'd agree your pretty safe. I wouldn't feel too bad about overfilling the gearbox. That bubble in the sight glass has fooled a lot of people. And we all seem to learn the best by our own mistakes.

Re: Advenntures in Experimental Metal Spinning

I'm more than impressed. And most of what you posted was all new to me. Pretty much all I know about metal spinning is what I've read. It's apparently not as easy as it looks.
