Re: Why me? An incoherent rant
Wife wanted a sliding door on the closet. Hinged door just gets in the way. Hired a local handyman to do it, as I don't have time and he can get things done in 1/4 the time I can do it. We get it all assembled and hang it, and the bolts and nuts holding the door to the hangers are scraping the casin...

Re: Mystery tool identification
Thanks.
With all the depth and breadth of knowledge here, I figured I'd get the answer.

Mystery tool identification
Someone handed me this tool and said "do you know what this is?" MysteryTool.jpg I take that as a challenge. I tried google images and all I got were potato peelers. I said "I know a bunch of guys that could figure it out". The two hooks don't have any mechanism to lock them in p...

Re: I found it!
I had a friend over and he was looking at my tap storage. He said: "Stanley planes use a 1/4x24tpi thread. I'll bet you don't have a tap for that!". Looked in the drawer, handed him three of them and said "Pick one". And when I walk in the store and someone asks is they can help ...

Re: Spotting scope
My dad had a Tasco back in the 60's. I think my brother has it. While it wasn't as clear as anything made by Leica, it was perfectly usable at 100 yards. Whatever you get, look through it at something distant. Do that on a clear day so that the weather is not getting in the way of seeing a clear pic...

Re: Ford Trimotor airplane
The one that is hanging in the Smithsonian with American Airlines markings was an actual plane flown by AA when it was new. When the 707 came out, which it technically a "tri-motor", they found the Ford, restored it to flying condition and flew it around the country as a publicity event to...

Bifocal safety glasses
I use 1.50 for computer work and for seeing my work on the lathe, but I can't read my micrometers or plans/books with them - need 2.50 for that.
Can anyone recommend a good rugged pair of bifocal safety glasses?

Re: 0-80 Square Nuts
Can you mount a dremel with a thin cutoff saw or cutoff wheel on it to part them? There are dremel mounting brackets available. I have a craftsman die grinder with a mounting bracket I can connect to an AXA toolholder. My dremel cutoff wheels are 0.025". If you can mount it to a toolholder, you...

Re: workbench top finish
For now, I'm looking at using a sheet of plywood which will be on top of laminated 2x4's. The wood will be screwed down and removable. Eventually, I will be covering it with a 3/8" steel plate (have a source to get a piece dirt cheap), but I can't do that right now for logistical reasons. I fig...

What is a good finish to put on a bench top?
Something that can at least somewhat resist physical as well as chemical abuse (oils and solvents).
