Optical Comparator

Hi Guys Got another neat toy today; a J & L optical comparator. A friend of mine had it in his shop; had bought a newer, bigger one with DRO. I had something he wanted so no cash changed hands & I ended up with it. He showed me a little about how it works but doesn't know much about it himse...

Re: casting lead weights

Hi Bruce How large are the weights you're making? I used to make big (up to 8oz) fishing sinkers; mold was AL (or appeared to be) & if you didn't pre-heat the mold for the larger ones they'd "layer" as they'd solidify before the mold was full. Lew "up the nafta raceway" in Waco

Re: Need power hack saw evaluation advice

Hi Mike I have an antique Marvel saw; have only used it a couple of times but see no real "secrets" to it. Only problem I have is it has the dog gear mechanism disabled (it's damaged; has been modified so it's always engaged) so it has to be ready for the return stroke or the motor doesn't...

Re: drill dr. or darex?

Hi If you go with Black Diamond be sure all the collets & adapter tubes are included (assuming you buy used). The collets are proprietary (no one else makes them) and cost about $170 each. Fortunately mine had one (of 2) included so I used it as a pattern for making the other one. Tubes (so the ...

Re: sheldon lathe, oil seals?

Hi Orrin Can you explain these classes of bearings? I need to replace the spindle bearings in a Lagun mill; a friend suggested 7's for the lower bearings & 5's for the top of the spindle. Does this sound right? I assume the higher numbers are more precision? I have a local bearing supplier that ...

Re: Bridgeport Series I Control Conversion

Pic 2; the servo motor & its control. there's also a black box that all of the cables go into & has the power switch for the servo. Mitutoyo box has its own power cable & switch but y looking connectors tie the servo & mitutoyo control wires together before entering the black box. Lew

Re: Bridgeport Series I Control Conversion

Here's a couple pf pix; the Mitutoya box pic'd here is tied in with the servo unit (next pic) as more buttons on this one work when the servo power switch is turned on.

Re: Bridgeport Series I Control Conversion

Hi Marty You may have noticed on the CNC & tools & tooling list my post about the Lagun I traded for. It has a Servo II setup on the X axis that's tied into the Mitutoyo control box with also a small control box on the servo motor (just noticed it's just slid down into a clip on the servo mo...

Re: Lagun mill

Thanks Barry Seems like I read somewhere that the spindle bearings in a Bridgeport were real tricky or hard or something to change. Did either of these you mentioned with the Laguns change their own or did they "have them done?" I don't mind changing them myself but don't want any "su...
