Looks like that's what most of this is about. Anybody doing anything bigger? I can enjoy the fire/water powered machines of any size. But when it comes to practical life, I want to get some work done. Locomotives are interesting too, Last one I saw was the narrow gauge in south central PA, rode behi...

new/old acquisition.

Last winter/spring I bought a vertical mill from a friend, but left it in his shop, but he's fixing to move now so finally got it moved. It weighs 2,750 lbs. fabco 2 hp from the 50's. I just bought his lathe also, a JET of medium size, but since I already have a lathe that will do what I need, (J E ...

Re: SPAM?

and when i come to see what it's about there's no message here. Must have already been deleted, which is fine, I don't do CNC anyway. Far as I'm concerned it's for production work only. I don't want my machines doing something without me being in control, and I'm doing only single items anyway.

Re: corliss valve material

Thanks, I was looking at 360 assuming it would make good bearing metal. Is 360 too soft? I already got a rod of it to make bushings for a dozer track idler wheel. Now I'm wondering how well that will wear. It runs in gear oil bath. While the engine valves have just a little lube from the inline oile...

corliss valve material

Working on a full size engine for practical use. Brass rod in cast iron is what I'm thinking of doing. Probably better than steel valve rods. It'll be 2" thick bolt on heads with valves in head. A 4"x10" cylinder made of a dozer engine sleeve. I've decided on corliss valves for their ...

Re: They just don't get it

I've heard that a lot of the technical trade school students are foreign exchange students, learning to take it home with them. I didn't have parents that knew technical things, but I did have an ancestry of inventors and farmers, and the talent set to be interested. It's taken a long time but I'm w...

boring corliss valve holes

I'm thinking about revisiting my unfinished engine project. Kind of got stalled on what kind of valve to use, I finally decided to go with corliss since it has the advantage of independent exhaust and inlet control and infinite control of inlet cutoff %. So I can use the valve timing for throttling ...

Re: spark plug manufacture

I've seen the corian plug idea, but not sure I want to trust it for the application, and spark plug manufacturers do not make tungsten electrode plugs because they'd last too long and kill their repeat sales. (various inventors have tried to get them made unsuccessfully) A lot of people think indust...

spark plug manufacture

Looking for someone's help to point me to source of info. I have a need to make custom spark plugs to fit a non standard plug hole and using tungsten electrodes, they would be medium to large size and for long term low maintenance running of the engine. been searching for info on making the porcelai...

Re: Big Live Steam

I got a chance to ride the narrow gauge at East Broad Top Railroad a few years ago, something about those things makes me want one. Oh well, I'll settle for the 40 hp 4x4 steam tractor I'm working on.

Re: old wells/index mills

The one with rigid quill does have a much larger tool mounting fixture, (do not know the designations yet) however I discovered why it's a fixed quill. The splined hole in the drive hub is worn out/stripped and a bolt put through it, plus the quill vertical drive removed and so heavily painted over ...

Re: old wells/index mills

well, I've been unduly busy with extra help and lots to do, but got them both home safely, had some quirks with the other process though, the "swap for a jeep and use it to pull a camper home" deal did work but the jeep had a rod bearing give out halfway home, had to go back and get it wit...
