Thanks. Gotcha.

Can't really drill anything close to the size of the larger holes... I do have some bits that approach 1" but boy, those things do apply some torque to the part and tailstock (I'd think)...

Ok, mystery solved. As stated above, pulling the handwheel left disengages the pulley from the bull gear. At that point I can put it in back gears. My hangup last night was thinking I should still be able to turn it by hand- I can't. But the motor can. Thanks all. Getting to know this old machine in...

Ok, so there is a small, knurled brass screw (slotted) with a lock nut on it on the handwheel. It's pretty frozen and once I determined it wasn't "the pin" I didn't mess with it. The handwheel is sort of splined onto the spindle and will indeed pull to the left, disengaging the spindle fro...
