Seems simple till you consider that there are both male and female couplers with auto shutoff features. Not common but available.

Me, I would be tempted to indicate off the inside of the jaws where they contact the part. As long as the two jaws opposite read the same the part is centered between them.

If this is your case then your iron is to small. Go to a higher wattage iron and heat faster not allowingthe heat to travel up the wire.

If I read the problem correctly you are bending rods of varying lengths and want both legs to come out the same length relative to each other. It would seem to me that you would have to place the rod in the bender aligned with a mark that represents the middle of the bend and let the ends fall where...

Above is the real world calculations. I would expect that they could hold near true for scale locos also.

On the school machine I have, two of the threading gears were worn but the rest were pristine. It was obvious to me that those two threads were the same class project year after year.
