When this subject comes up I post the above link. I had the same thing happen with a 2" sanding drum on a DP . The JT taper will not hold.

Re: Show us your lathe!
mars-red, Could you provide a little information on the green belts used? It appears they can be made to order, which could prove to be invaluable to some folks. An example might be for use as the drive for the oil pump for a model 1290-D Sunnen hone. The belt, to my knowledge, is no longer availab...

you can connect up with one of the local clubs here, http://www.midvalleymodelengineers.com/ There is a group centered in PDX but a lot of members are in both groups.. The guys in PDX have a subgroup that are futzing with CNC that sounds just up your alley.

Above is one company that deals with ball plungers as well as many others. Peruse their site and maybe give their customer service line a call.

You're not going to escape the heat much though, we are having record highs this week and expect the next 3 days to reach 100+. Also going on this weekend is Power up at Antique Powerland. http://antiquepowerland.com/

Re: Anyone know what lathe this is?
Tie bar Hendy . But with no tailstock not worth hauling of except for scrap, and no drive system to boot. Have you seen what people are paying for industrial legs like that? Chuck the lathe for parts and put the table and legs up for sale at $1000 or so and make a killing. Sacrilege I know, but that...

Re: Long reach inside calipers
Assuming they'll fit in the bores, a simple screw adjusting caliper will do the job. With care, you can measure to less than a thou. You may have to modify the tips slightly, due to the shallowness of the bore that must be measured. No big deal. And they're one hell of a lot cheaper than dial calip...

Re: I am an idiot
I remember one of the first projects I was working on was a Fly Cutter with an integral R8 shank. I did all the turning very carefully and blued the tapers and all was looking good. Last thing was to drill and tap for the draw bar. Put in a real nice 1/2-20 thread and went to install it and the draw...

McMasters has a variety of shim stock. Peel-able, slotted, or flat stock may serve you. The .001" stuff cuts easily with scissors and can be hole punched in a variety of ways. If you get flat brass a gasket punch will do.

One other problem could be that the caps are on the wrong journal. Were they marked so that they could be returned to the correct spot and the correct orientation? If the caps are symmetrical then you have one correct and a possible three wrong ways to install the caps.

Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby
I believe it is healthy but changing. Some of the change is coming by way of CNC work. I belong to a hobby club and three of the members have Tormach machines. Those guys are moving on to forums that circle around the computer and electronics side of the hobby. So the manual machinists and the CNC g...
