Re: Digital caliper accuracy
Dunno about the others, but I use the calibrated collars on the feed controls to get positions. That’s how I learned to do it over 60 years ago—well before DROs existed. It worked then and works now. Unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money, you will never get a DRO that can be trusted to be...

Re: Temperature a factor?
The temperature coefficient of steel is between 6-7 x 10^-6 in/(in*F), so if the temperature of a 3" diameter part rises by 100F, it would be ~0.002" bigger than before. Some materials, like aluminum, will change more and others will change less. I use this site for a lot of data like that...

Re: How to converge to the desired diameter when fitting pieces?
It's been my experience that carbide inserts do not sneak up on a dimension as well as hss, at least not out of the box. Of course, grinding your inserts defeats the purpose of using them in the first place. As mentioned early on, it's usually better not to sneak up on it. I have probably read the l...

Re: Space-saving suggestions for small shops
For shallow drawers, I bought 4 of the us general lower cabinets and stacked them. There are still some deeper drawers which works out well and they'll hold some heavier stuff. That was worth the membership thing for a year.

Re: Differences in Quick Change Tool Posts
Well the aloris and Dorian... Just kidding. I can't say for sure how much different the various brands are. Likely they are all very similar with "better" brands maybe having better quality control. I would say, buy from a place that has good customer service so that is what you end up wit...

New DTI holder
Been awhile since I last visited. Work has consumed a lot of my life lately. That also means I've not spent the time in the shop I would like to. This weekend though, I decided to just do something relaxing, so I made a tool I've been wanting to make for several years. I have an Indicol clone that i...

You may see it described as break-before-make. On-On is fine as long as it is break-before-make, and not make-before-break.

Re: How to Make This Part
Unpopular opinion here, but on parts where I don't have an em of the desired size, if the fitment needs to be good but the actual surface isn't super critical, I'll go with the closest, but smaller, em I have and do a circular hole pattern inside the radius. Discing of the plunges is determined by t...

Re: Electrical Wiring DOES Degrade with Time
What is the best, in y'all's opinion, cord to use when wiring up a machine in a shop environment? I always thought some or sjoow we're good choices because they remain flexible and are pool resistant. But I too have seen it degrade faster than I expected Ffs! I just reread my post. Stupid phone! .....
