Re: Duplomatic T50 tracer attachment, refurbishment

Good luck. Tracer projects seem to have an inherent drag on progress. Most every one I know of is on the slow path or gathering dust like mine. I got mine mostly worked out, but when it came to the template holder and micrometer infeed mechanism, it just never went further. I'm pretty sure I had fig...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

I don't have a setup to flood, but did apply a needle stream of light cutting oil with a lab washdown bottle at about 60 sfpm (110 rpm) with light feed. It actually made nice slice chips that curled nicely with a great finish... until it didn't. The edge just didn't hold up quite long enough to get ...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Well, not much shop time with grandkids over, but I hoped to have some good results today. Sadly, I have utterly failed. Wasted 1/2" of expensive alloy, and 3/8" of 1/4" round HSS bit trying to machine this race. It actually started well, and I almost had one complete, when the edge o...

Re: Heat treat temperature calibration

Perfect, thank you. A cheap home shop method for testing readout/control accuracy close to the range that I need accuracy. If it's not pretty darn close, I'll know I need to invest more time and attention (money) toward gaining accuracy I need.

Re: Monitor for Acad

I just use an old school drafting table with "drafting machine". Much faster than computer layout for the stuff I do... As others have said, as long as the inputs are available, you can use a "TV" as a monitor. And they make ridiculously large monitors now, but I find multiples o...

Re: Heat treat temperature calibration

Agreed. That was mentioned earlier, and sacrificing a 1/8" of material to test would be wise.

Re: Heat treat temperature calibration

Thanks all.

I guess this is just another case of me over thinking things. I'm just going to go with it.

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Thanks all. Stephen: I definitely identify with your description. On some things I confidently make my choices, do my best, and move on. But on others, as with this race, there are points of thought that lead me to what I have heard called "analysis paralysis". It's more common for me than...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Stephen: That was basically my earlier outlook. But then as I pulled the trigger (buying material and budget HT oven), I began to have second thoughts. Accuracy in terms we usually think about (spindles, etc) isn't even on the radar. BUT, this is a nominal 6T jack (probably built to handle 10T+ for ...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Harold: Your advice is always helpful, assuming my low experience mind can mentally assimilate it all. :D Thanks for confirming my guess on using the round bit. I had considered the problem with loosing that critical roundness if I take the cutting edge out of the normal plane. Regarding rake vs tha...

Re: Heat treat temperature calibration

Thanks. Interesting. I ran across them some time back, but had forgotten about them. Looks like they start a bit above 1000*F, so not able to calibrate at my target temp of 900*F. Also seems that (quick glance) are a minimum of ~60*F between each number (for lowest temp range 19, 18, 17), which is l...

Re: Heat treat temperature calibration

Thanks. I have used and considered tempil (sp?) sticks, but you have to watch those for the transition. I'm more concerned with whether the digital controller takes it to temp (900*f in this case) and holds that temp within a few degrees as required for my pending 17-4 bearing race project. And I ne...
