Re: Newbie attempting first project.
If the Shay was a bolt together / drill / tap / & plumb kit like the LE of the old days, I would consider it right off the bat. It would take 20 years of buying one piece at a time though. The fact that machined kits are no longer available (RR supply, maybe?) has had a shot of new hope with the...

Re: Newbie attempting first project.
I like the ones I see, but the size & complexity is a bit much for what I have room for & not to mention my old Cherokee is all I have to transport anything. If I pull off completing an 0-4-0T or Sugar Pine "Betsy", it would be my next choice!!

Re: Newbie attempting first project.
Dan & Rob, I applaud your efforts, a beautiful 10 wheeler & I would love to see a pic of that K-4!! I intend to hang in there & build something. I know half the battle is getting started. It is tougher for me since the nearest clubs are 4 hours away. I understand there was a club in Tuls...

Re: Newbie attempting first project.
As far as the transmission question: 2 are identical, 3 speed forward, neutral, & reverse. 1 is single speed forward, neutral, & reverse. These were salvaged & used, as is but appear to be in good condition & operating. I will have to get what info I can off the cases if available &a...

Re: Newbie attempting first project.
I have seen many of the options beginners have steered toward and I see potential in the Little Engines Crab. I have read a previous post about it as well and have become aware of the pitfalls in it's design, but also see potential in the modified versions. I hope to find a project someone has start...

Re: Newbie attempting first project.
I appreciate the input. I do have plans in the works for 25 ton phase II GE in 2-1/2" scale drawn up. I have some lawnmower transmissions I may use with a gasoline engine or may go the electric route. I would rather build something that faithfully (within reason of course) represents an actual ...
