Re: Could I get tips on dumpster diving for materials for your build?

Going off the topic but… to paint galvanized you need to prep it with a wipe down of ammonia to remove the surface oxidation. A coat of self-etching primer and enamel paint. Done. I learned a trick while working in a restoration/hot rod shop… preheat parts whenever possible, not red HOT, what is cal...

Re: Could I get tips on dumpster diving for materials for your build?

Heck… my 1948 Gorton 8-1/2D milling machine was found outside in a scrapyard by a good live steaming buddy of mine. He asked the yard owner what he wanted for it and the reply was, "It weighs 2400 lbs so bring me 2400 lbs of scrap and it's yours!" My buddy did just that even though he didn...

Re: Could I get tips on dumpster diving for materials for your build?

Our hobby was born from scrap metal. I own several locomotives built as early as the 1920s to the 1970s and those early ones were built entirely from "scrap". No one bought shiny new metal for a hobby during the Great Depression or WWII. So we know it can be done and done safely when it co...

Re: Highline Videos

Jim, Is there a map somewhere of the tracks at MLS? Hi Ken, Here's a layout from the proposal back in 1999. It's not drawn to scale, the steaming bay layout is not like this, there are now enginehouses (not shown) and there is no pedestrian bridge. The mainline is approximately 1370-feet long. The ...

Re: Portable Hi-Line Track

I photographed the "TSME" track when I visited David Croft at his home after it was suggested I might be interested in moving it here. I should post up a separate thread about that track. maybe some TSME members would be able to contribute some photos and history.

Re: Portable Hi-Line Track

I'm currently erecting my loop of "Art Ellis - TSME" track. I'm doing it all on my own and don't find it terribly difficult but the 16-foot long sections are heavy so I used my lawn tractor to drag them into a rough position. This is just a temporary location for the winter. I will be movi...

RussN
You would have to ask Steve Bratina. I failed chemistry in high school.

It works like most of the old remedies for boilers like adding hooves or manure.

How much potato should I use on my small boiler?
Add about 4 or 5 slices, like french fries.
