Re: 2 1/2" Scale Flat Car - Triennial or Bust

As a distraction from my GE 50T project, I brought the flat car from storage and welded the coupler pocket inside ends in place and the angle iron for the safety attachment points. I also routed all the deck edges for a nice, clean edge + routed out the deck for 7 stakes on each side. (no pockets ye...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I spent the morning working out the wiring diagram, checking for parts, making the control box, etc. Then I realized the weather was excellent and that I should save electrical for a rainy day. I worked on the motor mount and finally assembling a drive axle. Early on I had determined that there was ...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

After 105 days - the first part for the SP1 is finally completed! Huzzah. Retainer.jpg That is the Journal Box (pillow block) retainer. 1st of 7. I put the new pipe up against the fuel tank - it is a great size (maybe a bit undersized even) air tankTest.jpg Finally I played with the MIG welder some....

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Loan, no return date - he isn't using it right now... I bought some .030 wire and tips this morning and have been watching YouTube. :-) I helped a guy move this morning. He was throwing out some speaker stands. I now have two 4' pieces of 3" dia steel pipe and 3 pc of 1 5/8" steel pipe. Th...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Great point about the lathe. currently sitting on a sheet of MDF on 2 plastic sawhorses :-)

I've never met the guy who dropped off the MIG welder. I was pretty surprised to say the least.

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

The 16" bed upgrade was good, The DRO is money well spent, and the 4" 4 jaw chuck has made a world of difference. So much better than the original 3 jaw that I use it even on the round bar stock. Generally I take about .017. It does that very nicely. If I go more (and I can/have) it gets m...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I already learned that one the hard way. Thought my DRO was broken. I needed the dia xx smaller , so I cranked the slide in that much. The shaft was, of course smaller than intended. I felt pretty dumb once I figured it out. I finished this axle and it is my best yet...and the first one I would have...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I drilled and tapped the holes for the strap that limits the pillow block travel (preventing it from falling out of the bottom of the truck) in one sideframe. Continued working on the pilot. I was at my local Tractor Supply when I saw these repair parts for a John Deere. They looked like 2/3 of a 3 ...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

I continued working out the details for the pilot. Here is a test build of the pilot made with hand tools. The hole angles were eyeballed Actually, I was surprised at how well it went. The bottom plate goes to the trash now but I worked out how to drill the holes at an angle. I decided to drill the ...

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

after this pic I added a 1/8" plate to extend the surface that the roller bearings on to allow for a tighter turning radius. After final assembly the bolt will be cut down. I got a longer bolt than necessary so that the bearing ID would be on the shoulder and not the threads.

Re: SP NG Diesel #1 (GE 50T) - Triennial or Bust

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I had the settings for welding thinner stock and was going about the speed I needed to keep from burning through MOST of the time...I failed to crank up the power and/or slow down when I went to the thicker stock. I slowed it down today...and even got my first de...
