Re: The math of air compression?

Without really answering your question; You need to know the compression ratio, which is the outlet pressure divided by the inlet pressure, or about 93.2/14.7 or about 6.34:1 with your numbers (need to work in absolute pressures). The k value for air is 1.4, if I remember correctly. There is a simpl...

Re: Could an end mill be used for slab milling

I needed to surface a 3" wide x 16" long piece of steel stock, and had a 1 1/4 " x 6" end mill, tried it. Got the depth of cut or feed slightly too high and there was a twang, and I had two endmills, one minus a shank. Tried a second one and same results without getting far. Deci...

The local San Juan power plant did essentially the same thing; short run from the mine to the power plant. Ended up with part of the train in the pit.

Re: Best tap for hard steel.

If the work is portable, a hand tapper is a great project. I made this one years ago and it has saved me a ton of taps. Most all the parts came from the recycle pile except possibly for the tap chuck.

Re: Need tips for keeping countersink concentric with hole.

I bought a number of the self piloted tips from Boeing surplus in Seattle when they were active, Most of them have a 1/4-28 thread. Quite easy to make up your own shank from some 3/8" or 1/2" dia rod and a little lathe work. Also picked up a few of the Micro stops, might be able to find on...

Re: Cast Iron - Recommendations?

There are multiple procedures for welding cast-iron and it has been done successfully for many years. One of the welding handbooks, or a metallurgical lab, can provide samples of acceptable procedures. A test, using the applicable bits, is a good place to start. There are several possible excuses fo...

Re: Clausing 5310 problem.

There is a lockout mechanism so the threading and power feed actions cannot be engaged at the same time. If this is a used lathe, I have seen a situation where the lockout mechanism was damaged and both functions could be engaged at the same time. Best case, just locked up, worst case, some damage. ...

Re: Delrin bushing

With PVC, cut a ring, split it, Glue the split ring over the bearing tube following the glue instructions carefully, and put a worm gear hose clamp on it until the glue has fully set. Works quite well.

Horizontal Boring Mill if I remember correctly - not found in many shops, and they are usually large monsters.

Re: Delrin bushing

What about 2" PVC pipe, which is almost exactly the size you need at 2 3/8" od. Use sch 40 or sch 80 to get enough wall thickness and then a bit of lathe work to bore to size.

Re: Pool pump duty motor

Pool pump would imply continuous duty and a constant load near max. Worth a try, depending on the price.

I am using a similar motor for a home-made grinding station; admittedly intermittent duty and light loads.
