Got my point (also) 1.5" vs. 1.6" scale diminsions
Bill: You got the exact point I was trying to make. One other thing.... The SuperScale union that Dave discribed is in 1.6" scale and would be porportionately larger when used on an 1.5" scale engine. If you are BUILDING to 1.6" scale, .266 is the correct scaled diminsion for 2" ...

SuperScale's fittings
Fred V: SuperScale's plumbing fittings like Pipe Unions, Plugs, Nipples, Globe Valve necks, and the like, are CNC machined from brass bar stock. Valve bodies, elbows, "tees" and other cast pieces are investment cast as are all of SuperScale's highly detailed castings. All unions and valve ...

Bearing Bore Tolerance
Housing bore tolerances for a 22mm (o.d.) DRAWN CUP needle bearing per my trusty ol' Torrington data book..... Finished Bore Diameter: > in metric dim's: 21.972mm (min.) / 21.993mm (max.) > in inch dim's: .8650 (min.) / .8658 (max.) Bearing outer race will straighten out once pressed into housing bo...

More Ideas to Share
More Ideas to Share..... Something else you can do if you use the "lube through the axle end" method: As mentioned in other posts here, you can use a standard "Zerk" (or other) fitting in an adaptor with a 8-32 (or 10-32) thread on the end where it screws into the axle. If you us...

Grease or Oil? (CORRECTION)
CORRECTION (to my first post on this thread.... ) ""Another variation to the above idea is to install the grease fitting ONLY when lubing and then removing it and screwing in a plug to seal it until the next time you need to re-lube Regardless, with this method the grease/oil fitting is h...

Grease or Oil?
10 Wheeler Rob: I would go with any good quality lithium based bearing grease. If you don't install a dust/dirt seal in the journal box, the grease will act as the seal in the gap between the journal box axle bore and the axle. All you need is around .005 to .010 larger diameter clearance over the a...

Attn: 10 Wheeler Rob I don't know what size/type roller bearing you're using... A drawn cup needle or a heavy-duty (non-drawn) needle/roller bearing. For your referance, per the Torrington catalog data sheets, here are the tolerences on Torrington's 1.000-i.d. inner races: Race for Drawn Cup Needle ...

I have machined both 4140 and 4140-HT for axles that had inner races (sleeves) put on them for use with needle and roller bearings. 4140-HT is pre-heat treated to around 28 to 32 Rc at the mill, but that still isn't hard enough for the bearing's rollers to ride directly against. 4140-HT is also a go...

During the past 30 years, it seems I have found that if you ask a half-dozen different machinist's as to how they would set-up and/or machine or make a given part, you'd be certain to receive a half-dozen different replies as to how to do the job. All of the various answers/methods you'd get will wo...

I've also made bushings from phosphor bronze, even made a few from aluminum bronze (tough stuff!!!) I've leaned towards 660 because larger local bearing houses tend to have a decent selection available of solid stock sizes as well as sleeve bushings in inventory. When you decide on your choice of ma...
